Romantic poet, Lord Byron, is one of England’s greatest literary heroes and his first poem was written at the age of 10 and was about Nottingham. His connection to the county is well documented. Where else better to rekindle your romance than in the county where Byron once lived?

Newstead Abbey

Once home to the notorious poet Lord Byron from 1808 – 1814, the Abbey is a beautiful historic house set in a glorious landscape of gardens and parkland within the heart of Nottinghamshire. The Abbey covers more than 300 acres with paths that meander past lakes, ponds and waterfalls.
A gentle stroll will take you through a beautiful Japanese Garden, Rose Garden, Walled Garden and a Spanish Garden. To continue a romantic getaway, you can spend the night at another of Byron’s former homes, Colwick Hall Hotel and make sure you book an evening at the newly-opened Byron’s Brasserie. On the walls you can see portraits of Byron and his lovers, along with the poet’s own words.
Admission: The charge for visitors is £6 per vehicle. This includes entry to the grounds and gardens at Newstead Abbey and covers all passengers within the car.
Creswell Crags

There are few things more romantic than taking a walk with a special someone, so why not escape the stress of everyday life and explore the countryside around Creswell Crags?
These ancient caves were once a magnet for starry-eyed Victorian ladies who believed that if they threw their hatpins into one of the pools they would marry the first man they saw afterwards. Starting at the visitor centre you can choose one of several walking trails which take you through this enchanting area.
Admission: FREE admission to visit the Creswell Crags site and there is a £2 donation for all day parking.
Attenborough Nature Reserve

The peaceful landscape at Attenborough Nature Reserve has been admired by couples for years and is a great place to spot the wide variety of nature in its natural habitat. Opened in 1966 by Sir David Attenborough and listed in the top 10 eco destination in the world by BBC Wildlife Magazine, the site runs along the banks of the River Trent on the south side of Nottingham and is a the perfect place to go for a romantic stroll taking in some spectacular views and tranquillity. Once you’ve finished your exploration, enjoy a spot of lunch for two in the visitor centre’s café, which serves a selection of quality fair trade and organic homemade food.
Admission: There is a £1.50 donation to use the car park.
Sherwood Forest and Thoresby Estate

A really beautiful experience can be found in Sherwood Forest. The ancient oaks produce a strong, woody aroma which mingle with the delicious scent of the countless other trees. Exploring on foot is the best way to experience the beauty of the forest; ancient nature awaits you from the gnarled trunks of 1000 ancient oak trees. Did you know you can also get married there?
In the nearby village of Edwinstowe, you can also visit St Mary’s Church which is where, according to legend, Robin Hood married Maid Marion.

Nottingham Castle

The historic site at the heat of the Robin Hood legend is situated on a high rock and has six acres of Victorian inspired grounds and gardens to enjoy. The grounds boast magnificent views of the city and beyond!
Whilst there, treat yourself to lunch at Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem, the oldest Inn in England which is built into the rocky cliff below the castle. Snowdrops at Hodsock, Hodsock Priory
The snowdrops which bloom at Hodsock Priory are a sign that spring is just around the corner. The annual snowdrop display takes place in February and if you visit at this time you will be able to see a carpet of beautiful white snowdrops. After admiring 12 acres of spectacular snowdrop-covered woodland with your loved one, visit The Snowdrop Village which is located in front of the magnificent 19th century country house, and home to a luxury tea room, gift shop and plant sale – should you wish to take the Hodsock experience home with you.
