Paddle the Mighty Yukon River: The World's Most Scenic River Journey

Tourism Yukon

The Yukon is a land of waterways with the mighty Yukon River at the heart. Recently featured in the second series of Channel 5's World's Most Scenic River Journeys, the 1980 mile-long river is just waiting to be paddled.

The Yukon River is the fifth longest river in North America and it flows from Tagish Lake on the British Columbia/Yukon border through the Yukon and Alaska to finally drain into the Bering Sea. Rich in cultural history ranging from its first human use by First Nations people centuries ago, to the infamous Klondike Gold Rush 125 years ago, the Yukon provides modern day adventurers and one of the ultimate river trips on the planet.

Each of the 70 wild rivers in the Yukon is unique and offers canoeing adventures which include a diversity of wildlife, landscapes, geology and history. However, there's one trait all Yukon rivers share and that's nature at its most untouched and unspoiled.

Visitors can experience the breathtaking beauty of the 80% pristine Yukon wilderness for themselves on Frontier Canada's 19-day Classic Canoe Trip. This trip of a lifetime journeys over 400 miles from the territory's capital city of Whitehorse to Gold Rush town, Dawson City.

The historic route traverses stunning mountain ranges and past abandoned Gold Rush settlements. Each night visitors will camp in the wild on the sand banks of the river. Black bears are often seen, as are moose, bald eagles, beavers and grizzly bears.

One of the most thrilling parts of the expedition is when the river's smooth journey merges at the spectacular Five Finger Rapids, mentioned in Jack London's classic Call of the Wild. The maximum group size is 12 and previous canoeing experience is not required for the trip.

Home to Canada's highest mountain (Mount Logan) and the planet's largest non-polar icefields located in Kluane National Park - a UNESCO World Heritage site. One of North America's most undiscovered destinations; close to 80 percent remains pristine wilderness with 5,000-metre peaks, forested valleys, unspoiled waters and untamed wildlife. Roughly the size of Spain at just over 186,000 square miles, the Yukon is home to more than 160,000 caribou, 70,000 moose, 22,000 mountain sheep, 7,000 grizzly bears, 10,000 black bears and 250 species of birds, with a human population of only 41,000.
