Latest News: The Great Moose Migration Starts Earlier
Broadcasts begin on Saturday, April 18 at 12:00 AM CET on SVT Play, with the live chat opening at 8:00 AM CET on SVT Play and in the Duo app.

A quiet livestream from northern Sweden has become one of the most unexpected global viewing habits. This spring, “The Great Moose Migration” returns - drawing millions of viewers seeking calmer, screen-based escapes.

From April 22 to May 8, 2026, Swedish public broadcaster SVT will once again air Den Stora Älgvandringen (The Great Moose Migration), a continuous livestream following moose as they move from the coastal forests of northern Sweden’s UNESCO-listed High Coast (Höga Kusten) toward inland summer grazing grounds. Each spring, the animals cross the Ångerman River along a long-established migratory route, drawn by access to fresh vegetation and the region’s rich biodiversity.

What began as a niche experiment in 2019 with around one million viewers has evolved into a global phenomenon. In 2024 alone, the broadcast attracted approximately nine million viewers on SVT Play, with nearly a third of the audience tuning in from outside Sweden.

Part of the broader “Slow TV” movement - covered by outlets including The New York Times and CNN - the broadcast has built its following by doing the opposite of traditional television: no narration, no edits, and long stretches where very little happens.

In 2025, around 70 moose were filmed crossing the river. The season also saw an unusually high number of bear sightings, alongside appearances from otters, foxes, reindeer, and birds of prey - adding rare, unscripted moments to the otherwise tranquil broadcast.

More than 30 remote cameras capture the migration 24/7, producing over 500 hours of live footage.

Insights from a 2025 study by the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) indicate that the format supports stress reduction and mental recovery among viewers.

FACT BOX

Why It Works
Key findings from the 2025 SLU study include:

  • Emotional Proximity: Viewers experience a genuine sense of closeness to nature despite the digital format
  • The Sound of Silence: Natural sounds - wind, flowing water, and birdsong - play a key role in immersive relaxation
  • Authenticity: The absence of narration and editing strengthens the feeling of “being there”
  • Community: Live chat enables shared viewing, learning, and discussion around nature

What’s New in 2026

  • Multi-Camera Viewing: Multiple live angles, including picture-in-picture
  • Live Map Integration: Real-time overview of active cameras
  • Moderated Chat: Structured global interaction

Beyond the Livestream
Sweden is home to an estimated 300,000 moose, and the annual migration has increasingly sparked interest in seeing the animals beyond the screen. Travelers can encounter the “King of the Forest” through guided safaris, forest-based stays, and wildlife parks across the country. Visit Sweden recommends operators approved under the national Nature’s Best” quality and sustainability ecotourism label.

Options range from tracking moose in remote woodland to visiting conservation and education centers. Examples include: Wild Sweden wildlife safaris; Nordic Discovery (Dalarna); Hide & See (Arctic Sweden); Moose Garden (Jämtland); and Skullaryd Moose Park (Småland).

A Spring Ritual Beyond the Screen
Launching during Earth Month - beginning on Earth Day (April 22) - the broadcast taps into growing US interest in “ambient” and low-stimulation content.
