20 Dec 2019
Marriott International today announced the signing of Moxy Queenstown with owner and developer, Queenstown Central Limited. The 176-room, new build, stand alone hotel is expected to open in 2022, and is slated to mark the debut of the playful and experiential Moxy Hotels brand in New Zealand.
The signing of Moxy Queenstown positions Moxy as Marriott International's fastest growing brand in Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific. It is the third Moxy brand hotel signed in the region in the last 12 months, following the signings of Moxy Melbourne South Yarra in February, and Moxy Perth in July.
“The signing of Moxy Queenstown and the recent growth of the Moxy Hotels brand in Australia and New Zealand is reflective of what travellers want today – an accommodation experience, rather than simply a hotel room. Experience is driving travel both in New Zealand and globally, and the idea of a hotel delivering a lifestyle, an experience, a story is increasingly sought after by visitors,” said Richard Crawford, Senior Director of Hotel Development, Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific, Marriott International. “With different touches like a digital guestbook that displays guests' and locals' Instagram posts at the hotel in real time, check in at the bar over drinks and social spaces that feel like home for guests and locals to unwind, the Moxy brand is expected to be a launch pad for visitors to explore Queenstown, which is undoubtedly one of New Zealand's most exciting cities.”
Moxy Queenstown is expected to be conveniently located adjacent to Queenstown International Airport, near the banks of the Kawarau Falls Scenic Reserve and at the gateway to the region's acclaimed ski fields, such as The Remarkables. It will open within Queenstown Central, a mixed-use development located on Grant Road, in the heart of Frankton.
Upon opening, the vibrant and stylish Moxy Queenstown will offer 176 rooms, each featuring the Moxy brand's signature minimalist yet multifunctional design and keyless entry, via smartphone. Other playful Moxy touches will include the Moxy Bar, where guests can check in with a fresh cocktail or revel into the night and the Moxy Kitchen & Pick-Ups, serving nosh for every taste and grab-and-go options throughout the day. The mellow Moxy Library and the contrasting energetic Moxy Living Room promise spaces for guests to relax or socialise as they please, while a state-of-the-art gym and self-service laundry space will allow guests to live as though at home. Furiously fast and free WiFi will be available throughout the hotel's public areas, guestrooms and 150 square metres of meeting and event space.
“Visitation to Queenstown is booming, and the bold Moxy brand will be a lively new addition for adventurous, fun-seeking travellers to the city – both in its high-season winter and throughout summer,” said Sean Hunt, Area Vice President, Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific, Marriott International. “It was reported in early 2019 that the city welcomed approximately three million visitors last year, and this is only expected to grow thanks to additional government funding secured by Destination Queenstown to further its tourism offering. We're pleased to partner with Queenstown Central Limited to bring the Moxy brand to Queenstown and bolster the city's hotel landscape during this exciting period of growth.”
Simon Holloway, spokesperson for Queenstown Central, added, “QCL is excited to partner with the world-leading hotel operator Marriott to bring the Moxy hotel brand to Queenstown. Moxy Queenstown will be integrated into the next stage of our Queenstown Central development, extending the offering of specialty retail and office space, to that of accommodation, nightlife and culture. The Moxy brand is a natural fit for us, bringing a fresh and innovative approach to the hotel experience that is reflective of our own vision and values of our Queenstown Central development.”
Moxy Queenstown joins Moxy's global portfolio of 46 operating hotels throughout Europe, North America and Asia. Each hotel has the heart of a boutique property but an appetite for adventure, and is thoughtfully designed to deliver guests everything they want and nothing they don't. Flexible spaces allow guests to play, work and connect at an affordable price point, in the most vibrant cities around the world.
