Today, the Kenya Tourist Board (KTB) announced record upsurges in tourism to Kenya from the U.S. market. After three record months for June, July and August, the KTB recorded a 74% increase of tourism over last year, exceeding months that pre-date 9/11.
After a difficult time overcoming a U.S. State Department Travel Warning, Kenya has shown great resiliency in the U.S. market. The KTB feels the reason for this tourism growth spurt is due to increased consumer marketing and cooperative marketing programs with tour operators, along with very positive publicity from consumer publications.
The number of Americans to Kenya this summer surpassed every months numbers from the year 2000 except for our peak month. Were simply astounded at the rate of demand. Said Dr. Ongonga Achieng, Managing Director of the Kenya Tourist Board.
Security has been reassessed in the country. Tourism police, increased airport security and strengthened precautions at hotels and lodges have helped reassure travelers of their safety in the region.
Travelers seem to have become hardier to the warnings being issued by the State Department. Kenya seems to be on the top of travelers minds these days and our bookings are showing just that. stated Sunit Sanghrajka, Vice President of Operations for Big Five Tours. It has become evident that Kenyas appeal has not diminished in the eyes of Americans and the experiences travelers are coming back with are being relayed back to friends and family.
Adding to the recent burst of interest from the U.S., Kenya has experienced a very strong wildebeest migration in the Masai Mara, one of the worlds most-renowned game reserves. A large migration means an increase of predators in the area making for excellent game viewing conditions.
