JETWING HOTELS

Jetwing prides itself on being ahead of its time as far as eco travel is concerned, having successfully implemented a diverse range of eco and sustainable initiatives dedicated to the preservation of our planet's resources long before the advent of sustainable tourism.  For forty-six years, they have offered guests the holiday of their dreams, where time spent at one of their beautiful locations can be enjoyed safe in the knowledge that preservation of the lush natural environment sits at the heart of everything they do.

Their creative environmental solutions are many and varied. To reduce their carbon footprint, a large amount of their food production is carried out in-house (Jetwing Kaduruketha in Wellawaya provides rice for all of the other 39 hotels on the island), the air-conditioning systems are driven from biomass boilers, they desalinate seawater to deliver fresh water to feed the lush and colourful gardens and to provide fresh water for guests' bathrooms, and they even create bio gas from kitchen food waste.  Today, more than half of Jetwing Hotels' energy requirements are met by renewable sources.

For readers with a love of facts and figures, the 2019 stats show that Jetwing Hotels have treated and reused enough waste water to fill 114 Olympic size swimming pools, eliminated close to 4,000 kg of plastic waste by producing 343,045 glass water bottles, and through the use of solar panels, avoided C02 emissions to the tune of 661 MT, equivalent to the C02 absorbed by over 29,000 trees.

Their most recent projects include the commissioning of a bottling plant at Jetwing Warwick Gardens to provide reusable glass bottles for their hotels and villas in Nuwara Eliya, and the creation of a biogas digestor at Jetwing Lighthouse for effective management of food waste and renewable energy generation.  They are also delighted to announce that the upcoming new hotel Jetwing Kandy Gallery (opening January 2020) will also feature a Solar PV system to supplement grid electricity, a solar thermal system for hot water, 100% LED lighting, and an onsite water treatment plant.

As well as their drive to preserve the beauty of our natural environment, Jetwing also works closely with their local communities and strive to provide opportunities and give support to our young people through schemes such as the Jetwing Youth Development Programme (JYPD.) With JYPD they identified a distinct lack of skilled labour in the hospitality industry, coupled with high levels of youth unemployment in rural areas, and these critical factors inspired Jetwing to push for change.  Established in 2006, the aim of our programme is to provide youth with the training and support required for a career in the hospitality industry.  In addition to training, Jetwing has created exciting opportunities for young people in their own hotels.  The success of the Jetwing Youth Development Programme is evident; they are thrilled to see so many brilliant graduates realise their ambitions and embark upon their personal and professional journeys to a brighter future – whether with Jetwing or elsewhere.
