From Cajun & Creole Country to Brittany: Lafayette Brings Louisiana French Culture to One of Europe's Largest Festivals

Lafayette Cajun Country

More than 4,000 miles separate Lafayette, Louisiana, from Brittany, France, but the two regions share deep connections rooted in language, music, food, regional identity, and the preservation of living cultural traditions.

This summer, those connections will take center stage when Lafayette establishes a tourism presence at the Festival Interceltique de Lorient, one of France's largest urban festivals, attracting an estimated 800,000 to 1 million visitors annually. The 2026 festival takes place July 31 through August 9 in Lorient, Brittany.

Facilitated by Breizh Amerika, Lafayette's presence at the festival will showcase the region's distinctive music, cuisine, French heritage, and travel experiences to an international audience. It represents the latest chapter in more than a decade of cultural exchange between Louisiana and Brittany, encompassing musician collaborations, culinary partnerships, tourism and business programming, documentary filmmaking, official delegations, and reciprocal festival appearances on both sides of the Atlantic.

The announcement coincides with Louisiana musician Louis Michot's return to Festival Interceltique de Lorient, where the two-time GRAMMY Award winner and leading voice in Louisiana French music will perform with Louis Michot & Swamp Magic from August 3–6.

Michot's appearance continues a musical dialogue that has brought Breton artists to Lafayette for Festivals Acadiens et Créoles and other cultural programming, connecting musicians whose traditions are rooted in regional languages, cultural resilience, and the transmission of heritage across generations.

“Festival Interceltique de Lorient offers Lafayette an extraordinary opportunity to share our food, music, French language heritage, and cultural identity with hundreds of thousands of international visitors,” said Ben Berthelot, President and CEO of Lafayette Travel. “We are grateful to Breizh Amerika for helping create this bridge between Lafayette and Brittany.”

The Lafayette–Brittany connection offers a broader story about how two culturally distinct regions use music, language, cuisine, and tourism to sustain their heritage while creating new forms of cultural exchange.

“Every exchange creates new opportunities,” said Charles Kergaravat, President of Breizh Amerika. “A concert becomes a collaboration. A tasting becomes a tourism conversation. A festival booth becomes an invitation to visit Lafayette. That is the power of cultural diplomacy when it is rooted in real community relationships.”
