easyJet, Europe's leading low-cost airline today announced it is launching three new ski routes this winter, connecting Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield, Edinburgh and Glasgow International Airports with the popular ski destination of Geneva.
On 15 December, easyJet will begin operating daily services from Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield and Edinburgh to Geneva, whilst the weekly Saturday service from Glasgow to the gateway of the Alps will commence on 17 December. This will provide skiers from Scotland, Yorkshire and Humberside with the opportunity to book independent ski holidays at easyJet's famous low fares and travel from their convenient local airport.
Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield is a new addition to the easyJet network and the new daily service to Geneva will provide even more choice to travellers in the region. These are also the first new routes from Glasgow since 2001 and Edinburgh since 2002 and reflect the airline's commitment to the Scottish market. The routes will be operated by a brand new Airbus 319, the 6th aircraft to be based at one of the airline's largest European bases in Geneva.
The daily Edinburgh service is a result of investment from the Scottish Executive, in the form of the route development fund. This is a scheme introduced to support new direct air links which will bring economic benefit to Scotland. easyJet not only expects to give Scots new opportunties for travel for both business and leisure purposes to this great Swiss city, but also to encourage more Swiss tourists to Scotland.
Geneva is the most popular airport for skiers to access first class resorts such as Avoriaz, Chamonix, Chatel, Les Gets, Morzine, and Courmayeur.
easyJet offers more flights to ski destination airports than any other low-cost airline, with a choice of 82 routes to 14 ski airports. The airline has revolutionised the ski market, allowing those seeking winter sports holidays the chance to create their own ski package. Following the trend of DIY summer holidays and city breaks, consumers can now book their flights, accommodation and car hire, along with transfers and activities, independently online. This flexibility enables the traveller to create the break they really want at a much lower price. Seats will be available for sale at www.easyjet.com tomorrow, with fares from 29.99 one way (54.98 return including taxes).
easyJet Chief Executive Ray Webster commented; "easyJet is delighted to be launching these new connections between Scotland and Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield and the most popular ski destination in Europe, giving more skiers the opportunity to experience the flexibility and savings of travelling independently, with the additional convenience of flying from their local airport."
David Ryall, Managing Director at Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield said: We are delighted that easyJet has added Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield to its ever expanding route structure. The initial daily service to Geneva will certainly be extremely popular with business and leisure travellers alike and is a welcome addition to the airports growing portfolio of destinations. With the proven desire by people in the region to fly from Robin Hood Airport , 250,000 passengers in the first 12 weeks of operation, we are hopeful that this will be the first of many easyJet services to come to the airport. During the 2001/2002 Public Inquiry easyJet stated that the airports location would be good for the region so we are especially pleased that easyJet, one of the biggest names in the low-cost aviation market, has today been added to the list of carriers at the UKs newest airport - this is great news for the traveller and for Robin Hood Airport alike.
Richard Jeffrey, Managing Director, BAA Edinburgh Airport said: "As one of Edinburgh's most popular airlines we're delighted to see easyJet expanding, with a new winter service to Geneva. This announcement is excellent news for business and leisure travellers alike. We wish them every success as they continue to expand."
Stephen Baxter, Managing Director of Glasgow Airport, said: "We obviously welcome easyJets expansion from Glasgow, particularly as this year marks their tenth anniversary at Glasgow Airport. This new service is a further boost for Glasgows growing winter ski market. Geneva is an excellent base for skiiers with access to some of Europe's best ski resorts."
