Cliveden House Revives Former Stables to Launch New Restaurant

Cliveden House Hotel

The Astor Grill, a relaxed and convivial new restaurant, will open at Cliveden House, near Taplow, Berkshire, on 8 April 2016. Adjacent to the main House, The Astor Grill is located in the Duke of Westminster's former stable block, which subsequently housed Lord Astor's most prized fillies. The space will accommodate 38 with additional seasonal terrace seating for up to 40.

Adopting a characterful equestrian theme in its décor, The Astor Grill will offer an informal approach to dining at Cliveden. The all-day menu will be overseen by Executive Chef André Garrett, and will focus on a mixture of classic American and British dishes, many reminiscent of Cliveden's diverse owners and residents. The name – The Astor Grill - recalls the Astor family, who owned the house from the early 1900s. William Waldorf Astor, America's richest citizen of his time, then gave the house to his son and daughter-in-law, Nancy Astor, in 1906, and Cliveden became a vibrant social hub for guests as diverse as Charlie Chaplin, George Bernard Shaw and Winston Churchill.

Typical dishes on the lunch and dinner menu will include Crispy Cornish squid with devilled tomato mayo; English pea soup with mint and crème fraîche; Grilled chicken Cobb salad; Herb-rubbed spatchcock poussin; Cornish lobster and chips; The Astor burger; Wild boar sausage and mash; the Astor fish pie; Raspberry jam soufflé; and Peanut butter and milk chocolate mousse. The brunch menu, available daily until Noon, will showcase morning favourites, such as Buttermilk waffles with caramelised banana, pecan and grilled bacon; Omelette Arnold Bennett; and Chorizo eggs en cocotte.

Cliveden's Head Sommelier David Kubler has devised a list of rediscovered Old World wines for the list at The Astor Grill, including 20 available by the glass or carafe. There will also be a selection of English craft beers and artisan ciders, and a range of contemporary and classic cocktails – including some new signature options, such as The Bloody Nancy (a concoction of Chase English smoked vodka and tomato juice), and the Astor Fizz (Chapel Down Brut with Belvoir elderflower).

The Astor Grill today will be a cosmopolitan venue, echoing the fascinating history of the House. Its romantic setting also will showcase all the style and legendary hospitality that Cliveden is famous for, and will be the perfect place to escape to enjoy a late brunch, early lunch, or a relaxed supper.

The Astor Grill will be open daily from 9am until 10pm, featuring brunch, lunch and dinner menus. The full address is Cliveden House, Taplow, Berkshire SL6 0JF.
