Maryland Office of Tourism Development

BALTIMORE  – Light City, a new immersive international festival of bright lights and big ideas will launch in Baltimore, Maryland March 28-April 3, 2016. The free seven-day event will feature light as a backdrop for the celebration of ideas, ingenuity and creativity.

This family-friendly festival includes seven nights of free entertainment including 29 large-scale original works of light art, plus more than 50 concerts, 100 performances and a day-time, ticketed innovation conference called Light City U. The featured artists were selected by a panel of jurors from more than 200 entries with artists chosen from across the globe including artists from Canada, Spain, Australia and the United Kingdom.

Light City will feature something for everyone as the city becomes a beacon of light. Attendees can interact with unique lighted art along a 1.2-mile waterfront art walk showcasing light displays and structures, video projections, interactive light installations and strolling performances. Uniquely curated musical performances from classical to alternative will entertain festival attendees on two stages.

Light City U, scheduled to take place at the Inner Harbor's Columbus Center, is an innovation conference that aims to be a catalyst for change by bringing together business innovators, thought-leaders, and change-makers to explore the latest technologies and creative practices that can lead to a more responsible and equitable society. Light City U will bring together influencers and visionaries from across multiple industries including education, health, sustainability, social enterprises and creative industries.

Baltimore is a city of firsts and Light City is a powerful tie to the city's history and the future. It was 200 years ago in 1816 when Baltimore was the first city in the United States to suggest illuminating its streets with hydrogen gas lanterns. Within three years, the first gaslight in the country was established in Baltimore – revolutionizing the urban landscape and forever transforming cities across the country with light. Two centuries later, Light City Baltimore will give visitors a chance to experience why the city was long considered a guiding light of imagination.
