Tigerair Australia is celebrating a significant milestone with today marking ten years since the first Tigerair flight from Melbourne to Gold Coast took to the skies in Australia in 2007.
The celebrations begin at 9am this morning AEDT with the launch of a network wide super sale featuring thousands of bargain airfares available across all 24 domestic Tigerair routes, with great value fares starting from $10*. The sale finishes at 11.59pm AEDT Friday 24 November (or until fares sell out), with the vast majority of airfares on sale for travel between the start of May to the end of June 2018.
Tigerair also recently asked its staff members to nominate a deserving family in need of a break and will today send two families on a 'mystery holiday' from Melbourne to the Gold Coast. The families will be picked up from their homes by Tigerair cabin crew later this morning and taken to Melbourne Airport's Terminal 4. The families will be aware they are going on a holiday; however specific details will only be revealed once they arrive at the airport.
The two families will depart Melbourne for the Gold Coast early this afternoon (on-board TT562 at 1pm AEDT, as this was the very first service that Tigerair operated on 23 November, 2007) and will be provided with return flights, three nights' accommodation at Oaks Calypso Plaza, Con-X-ion Gold Coast and Starbus Melbourne Airport Transfers, family passes to popular attractions including Dreamworld, SkyPoint Observation Deck, and Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, and $1000 spending money.
Tigerair cabin crew and the airline's mascot 'Toby' will also be at Melbourne Airport today, with cake, balloons and gifts to passengers all part of the festivities.
Tigerair Australia Head of Communications Vanessa Regan says the airline is proud of its role in providing Australian's with the best value fares and flying more people for less over the past decade.
“Over the past ten years, Tigerair has played a key role in bringing affordable air travel to Australians and has brought healthy competition to the industry which is good news for all travellers.
“To date we've flown close to 26 million passengers which is more than the population of our great country, with approximately 16.6 million people having flown with Tigerair for less than $100.
“All in all it's a win-win for tourism, the economy and most importantly, for consumers.
“Ten years is a significant milestone and we look forward to the next decade as we continue to focus on delivering the very best in terms of affordable and reliable air travel with friendly service.
“In true Tigerair style, we're celebrating with great value fares from just $10* everywhere we fly and we are also sending two deserving families to the Gold Coast for a much needed break. Both of which highlight what Tigerair has been able to offer over the past decade - helping people fly and experience special moments with loved ones when they may not have had the means or been able to previously.”
Melbourne Airport Chief of Aviation Simon Gandy said Tigerair is a pivotal part of Melbourne Airport's domestic network.
“We are proud to support Tigerair and have been with them every step of the way since they commenced with us back in 2007. We now see a very different airline from the one that started with us in the original Terminal 4 and it is all credit to the management team and crew at Tigerair who not only deliver low-cost travel solutions, but do so with a keen eye on service. It's been great to see Tigerair grow and thrive in Melbourne.
“Over the past ten years we have partnered with Tigerair on many occasions including the opening of Terminal 4 and more recently the new Pier F where most of the airline's services operate from, and we will continue to support Tigerair in the years to come. On behalf of the Melbourne Airport team I wish Tigerair another successful decade.”
Gold Coast Airport Chief Operating Officer Marion Charlton said the introduction of Tigerair ten years ago was a game-changer for the aviation industry.
“The commencement of Tigerair in Australia changed the way people travel, providing the lowest domestic airfares we'd ever seen, making air travel affordable for everyone.
“Gold Coast Airport was thrilled to be a part of Tigerair's inaugural Australian flight ten years ago and today we are excited to celebrate all that has been achieved during our ten year partnership,” Ms Charlton said.
Gold Coast Tourism CEO Martin Winter also congratulated Tigerair on the momentous milestone.
“Congratulations on a decade of operations in Australia and for ferrying a multitude of passengers to the Gold Coast since Tigerair's inaugural flight to the Sunshine State.
“We predict the Gold Coast will remain Australia's favourite holiday destination in the years to come, and we thank Tigerair for their longstanding support of the destination.”
