Renowned New Mexico Santero, Charles Carrillo, will show his latest work Saints of the Pueblos at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center beginning August 15, 2004 and ending January 6, 2005.
Saints of the Pueblos is the first major exhibit for Indian Pueblo Cultural Centers new exhibit gallery included in its 12,000 sq. ft. expansion. The Carrillo exhibit features 19 retablos representing the existing pueblos of New Mexico and four abandoned pueblos for a total of 23 retablos.
The retablos depict the patron saint of each pueblo framed by traditional designs derived from each pueblos ancient pottery tradition. Throughout the years, Carrillo has extensively researched the pueblos pottery designs for the authenticity shown in his work.
In 2003, Carrillo exhibited a smaller example of Saints of the Pueblos at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center. The exhibit ignited wide interest for a bigger, more in-depth exhibit. The six-month exhibit launches Carrillos new book titled, Saints of the Pueblos, published by LPD Press. The Most Rev. Michael J. Sheehan, Archbishop of Santa Fe penned the books introduction. Included within the book are pictures of the entire exhibit and the pueblo pottery inspirations used in Carrillos retablos.
A panel discussion featuring New Mexico artists, santero Charles Carrillo, santera, Marie Romero Cash, Pueblo historian, Joe Sando and two Pueblo Sacristans will take place on October 19th at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Centers Silver & Turquoise Rooms at 7 p.m. The public is invited to attend to hear them discuss the significant exhibit, the tradition of worship and pottery of the pueblos.
The exhibit will tour in February, 2005 at Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe and other museums.
