Satisfying an increasing demand by tourists and business travellers alike, 2017 is set to see a growth spurt in accommodation across Denmark. No more so than in the capital Copenhagen where a number of the city's historic buildings have been nabbed for a stylish makeover. Setting the scene for the year to come in early 2017, renowned ballet dancer Alexander Kølpin will open the doors of Hotel Sanders, a 52 bedroom luxury boutique hotel with a colonial vibe, bespoke interiors and a stunning glass roof top conservatory for skyline gazing, located right next to the stunning Royal Opera Danish Theatre on Kongens Nytorv. 

Another theatrical remake will see the former Royal Danish Academy of Music meticulously renovated into the Nobis KBH Hotel. Neighbouring the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek and Tivoli Gardens, the 77 room hotel will have interiors reflective of the architecture and be the first foreign establishment for the Swedish luxury hotel group. 

Equally central and just a stone's throw from Vesterport Station with a view of Copenhagen's lakes, Arp-Hansen Hotel Group will launch the Group's first hostel in the former headquarters of the Danish Metalworkers' Union in the summer. New York-inspired with an industrial chic atmosphere, the aptly named Steel House will set a new standard for the modern city hostel with raw elements, soft textures and rustic interiors. 

Working on two new projects, Brøchner Hotels, owners of Copenhagen's popular Hotel SP34, will open Hotel Danmark - an exclusive 88 room boutique hotel with roof top terrace, urban vineyard garden and conceptual dining - in April, whilst continuing their transformation of one of the city's architectural gems. Born out of from an impressive disused 1960's substation, Bremerholm 6 will make an illustrious addition to the Brøchner stable on its completion in 2018. 

New Architectural Gems

Also adding to its portfolio, Scandic Hotels, the largest hotel operator in the Nordic countries, will add a ninth hotel to its Copenhagen properties with a new-build in the heart of the fashionable 'Meatpacking District', Kødbyen. Designed with the history and urban character of the area in mind, it will also open in 2018.

Another new-build, not to be overlooked, will be Charlottehaven's innovative 'green' hotel tower. Zinc clad with striking bays and windows overlooking the city, the 37 apartment hotel will incorporate borehole heating and cooling as well as integrated solar cells for distributing energy to make it self-sufficient

Capital Renovation

Benefitting from some 'capital' renovation, award winning Nimb Hotel in Copenhagen's famous Tivoli Gardens will continue to wow guests with a 2000 m2 expansion in 2017. Comprising 21 new luxury suites and a spectacular roof terrace overlooking Tivoli and the city, it will also features Copenhagen's first outdoor heated pool. 

Also taking bathing to new heights, Tivoli Hotel will unveil its much awaited glass bottom pool on the 12th floor Penthouse. Strategically hovering above the hotel facade at a height of 43 metres, the new pool area will also boast a sauna-with-a-view, sun loungers and a gym. 

In conjunction with finishing the final touches on its newly refurbished harbourside warehouses, four-star Hotel 71 Nyhavn will open 'SEA by KIIN KIIN', a sister to Copenhagen's Michelin Star KIIN KIIN.  Under the guidance of talented Thai chef Henrik Yde Andersen the menu will offer over 30 different dishes along with the exclusive opportunity of dining in the kitchen as part of the ultimate KIIN KIIN Journey. 

REGIONAL EXPANSION

Capital of Culture

Outside the capital, Denmark's second city and European Capital of Culture in 2017, Aarhus is continuing to flourish with the city's on-going regeneration seeing several new hotels and hostels opening in 2017. Renovating one of the city's former mission houses, local visionary and owner of two of Aarhus's most popular cafes Bogcafé and Vincaféen, Kenny Jess Brandt is set to convert the atmospheric period building into a boutique hotel with a touch of 1920's New York and Parisian flair. Opening in April 2017, it will jazz up the city with suitably themed 'Salon' nights.

Perfect for the budget traveller, a new Wakeup Hotel will offer facilities associated with 3- and 4-star hotels at 2-star prices when it opens. Based on relatively small, yet very well appointed rooms, with furniture from top Danish designers, it will offer fabulous views over Aarhus from the top levels of the hotel. 

With the movement of the main library to its new location at Dokk1 by the harbour, the beautiful old city library building in Mølleparken will offer another affordable option when it finishes its transformation into the Library Hostel with 100 rooms, 450 beds and a social space for both locals and travellers.

More 'Blocks' for LEGOLAND

In nearby Billund, LEGOLAND Holiday Village, one of Denmark's most well known attractions, is also expanding its sought after themed accommodation. Complementing LEGOLAND's extremely popular Ninjago World experience, the 50 new fully equipped and suitably adorned Ninjago Cottages will sleep 4 – 8 people and have access to a large playground where children and adults can practice their ninja skills. Ready for the beginning of the 2017 season, the DKK40 million investment will also include 30 new Wilderness barrels that sleep up to 4 people.

Seaside Resorts

Further afield and making the most of the pristine Danish coastline, owners of the popular Blåvand beach resort, Hvidbjerg Strand, are currently working on a new luxurious 24 room beachfront hotel. Due to be completed in the summer, the new Strand Hotel will have 25 sumptuous beach villas perfectly positioned amongst the dunes with unadulterated North Sea views.

Whilst in North Zealand, beachfront property Hotel Marienlyst is gearing up for the New Year with the completion of its 225 room renovation and launch of a new luxurious spa and wellness area in 2017.  Overlooking Sweden and Kronborg Castle, the newly refurbished rooms offer some of the best views to be had on the North coast.  

On a much smaller scale but no less impressive, Kyhn's Guesthouse has also just opened in the region.  Extensively renovated from a listed historic townhouse, the small hotel offers a stylish oasis in the heart of Elsinore with six individually appointed double rooms.

Stylish Shelter

Heading into spring, campers might like to check out Denmark's newest shelters. Designed by the Danish firm Lumo Arkitekter and dotted along Funen's Archipelago, these very basic, but beautifully constructed, huts offer hikers, campers, divers and surfers a temporary refuge from the elements in some of the most idyllic places. Inspired by traditional shelters used by Danish fishermen to store their catch, they sleep from 2 to 7 people.

There are plenty of flights from the UK to Denmark. Norwegian offers flights from Gatwick, Manchester and Edinburgh to Copenhagen and Aalborg. Additionally, Ryanair have flights from London Stansted and Luton to Aarhus, Billund and Copenhagen. EasyJet operates from Bristol, Edinburgh, Gatwick, Luton and Manchester to Copenhagen. British Airways operates from London Heathrow, London City Airport and Manchester to Copenhagen and Billund and finally, SAS offers daily flights to Copenhagen from London Heathrow, Birmingham, Manchester, Newcastle, Edinburgh and Aberdeen.
