Treasure Map Trails

Could your children complete a half-term treasure hunt around their local town despite the distraction of alien invaders, monstrous sea creatures or show-off superheroes?

That's the challenge posed by Treasure Map Trails (https://treasuremaptrails.com), who have released a trove of fantasy-themed, hand-illustrated treasure maps of English towns and cities, for children aged 5 to 12.

There are more than 35 adventures to choose from, with young explorers tasked with following the maps to find local, historical treasures such as statues, sculptures and eye-catching carvings.

The colourful A3 maps follow a town's real road layout and include recognisable buildings so children can find their way around, but each is drawn with a fantasy landscape to inspire young imaginations.

Themes include a fairy tale land for Covent Garden in London, an under-the-sea world in Oxford, a gravity-free moon map for Cambridge, and dinosaurs roaring around Chester. The full range of maps covers locations in central London, Herts, Beds and Bucks, Berkshire, Oxfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Shropshire and Cheshire.

Children must follow the trail to spot 10 or more treasures that are featured on their map, and at the end of their treasure hunt parents can download a certificate to chart their progress from cadet to master through the Treasure Map Trails Academy.

Daniel Johnson, who founded the company during lockdown says: “Each Treasure Map Trail gets kids outdoors and exploring with family and friends. It's a brilliant bonding experience, and a fun and informative way to see towns in a totally new light.

“There are so many local treasures that we miss because we don't take the time to stop and look at the buildings around us. Many have stood for hundreds of years, and they can be decorated with ghoulish gargoyles, intricate carvings and quirky signs that reveal fascinating stories about our local past.”

Where to buy: Each A3 treasure map costs £6.99, including postage, from https://treasuremaptrails.com.
