Discover D.C.'s Hot New Neighbourhoods With The Hay-Adams Hotel

The Hay Adams, Washington D.C

Known for its' timeless atmosphere, Washington D.C. is currently experiencing a renaissance. Let The Hay-Adams guide you off the beaten track into emerging boroughs, rich in both history and new talent, which are just waiting to be discovered.

The U Street corridor is a prime example. The residential neighbourhood is emerging from the shadow of the 1968 unrest, with quirky eateries and stylish boutiques sitting alongside historic jazz clubs. The Hay-Adams is perfectly located immediately next to the White House and D.C.'s top tourist attractions, yet just a 20 minute walk from the U Street area. Situated in an iconic 19th century landmark building, the elegant hotel retains the feel of a discreet private mansion with beautiful interiors and gracious service.

Head concierge, Eric Gammill is a keen fan of the U Street neighbourhood, explaining:

“The birthplace of Duke Ellington, historically the area was the centre of African American culture within the US. Originally hosting legendary blues and jazz nights featuring Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, U Street's grand buildings have returned to their vibrant roots with new restaurants, bars and boutiques springing up, making this such a lively and exciting part of the city to discover right now.”

Local landmark, Ben's Chili Bowl, is famous in its own right serving up their fabled chilli-dogs since 1958 and a host of restaurants have made U Street a dining destination. Gammill recommends Ghibellina, a Tuscan trattoria that recently opened in a former jazz club, where the house-made gnocchi is a must have judging by the block long queues. Other favourites include the Pearl Dive Oyster Palace, a bustling bistro which serves up wood-grilled oysters with garlic and gremolata, and Birch and Barley which has over 550 brews available by the tap or bottle.

Of course, a visit to U Street wouldn't be complete without stopping by one of the original music halls, including Gammill's favourite, Bohemian Caverns, which feature avant garde jazz, mainstream hip hop, and soulful blues. For a further taste of the area's history, head to one of the historic row houses that now house DC's best Caribbean and soul-food restaurants. The daytime scene is relaxed, with residents usually outnumbering tourists at the furniture stores, organic markets, and boutiques, and on the third Thursday of each month shops stay open late to offer refreshments and special deals.
