New walks through million acre cattle station, vast salt planes and a first for walking trail to Mount Connor plus Paper Making Workshops
Curtin Springs, a million-acre cattle station 100km from Uluru is offering new tourism experiences that include guided salt lake walks, Full Moon Walks and paper making tours and workshops.
The Curtin Springs Walks will offer one and two day guided walks along a vast and ancient salt lake system and, for the first time ever, give visitors access around the base of Mt Conner, so often mistaken by tourists for Uluru.
From the 6th December Full Moon walks will take place each month around the full moon. The walks will take place in the evening and include dinner at the homestead before travelling out to the Salt Lake to watch the moon come up over the crystalline surface.
The new tours have been created by the Severin family, who have called this spectacular and extremely remote part of the Northern Territory their home since 1956, when Peter arrived with his young wife, toddler and 1,500 head of cattle.
The 15km and 30km easy walking tracks take advantage of the changing light throughout the day and the effect it has on the salt lake surfaces, sand dunes and Mt Conner, which glows in shades of pastel pinks and purples, to fiery red at sunset. Walkers will also be able to hear all about life on a working cattle station as they pass two of the stations cattle yards.
The station also produces native grasses including spinifex, oat grass, woollybutt, kangaroo and kerosene grass that are mixed with sand, clay and flowers to produce handmade paper. Visitors can take part in one-hour paper making tours or four-day workshops which include harvesting grass, paper making, understanding how food production and land management are intrinsically linked and how growing cattle for meat production is balanced with a million acre wildlife corridor.
