Archery Programs Hit the Bull's-eye at Connoisseurs Scotland Properties

Luxury Scotland

Edinburgh, Scotland, November 2014 – Later this month as the character Katniss Everdeen returns to theaters in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1, the third movie adaptation of Suzanne Collins' series of young adult novels, audience members may once again wonder if it's really possible to do all those amazing things with a bow and arrow. For those looking to get in touch with their inner Katniss, perhaps a trip to Scotland is in order: Archery has been a popular sport in that country for centuries, and four members of the Connoisseurs Scotland family of luxury hotel properties offer lessons to guests both young and old. Though the winter months aren't the proper time for archery in Scotland, they're the perfect time to begin planning spring or summer trips … and these Connoisseurs Scotland hotels are eager to welcome North American guests interested in archery and a variety of other outdoor pursuits that will get them out into the Scottish countryside.

The sport of archery is one of the oldest known to man, dating to prehistoric times. It can be approached as an individual hobby or group activity, both genders can excel at it equally, and it's a sport that children can easily learn and embrace – as evidenced by its presence at summer camps for decades. A successful archer requires good vision, hand/eye coordination, balance, flexibility … and patience. It's an exciting and elegant sport to watch, as well, making it a fun activity even for people who aren't sure they want to learn to hit a target.

A magnificent baronial mansion surrounded by 100 acres of woodland in Scotland's first national park, Cameron House on Loch Lomond provides a full range of outdoor activities. Though it's perhaps best known for golf at The Carrick on Loch Lomond, this resort located just 30 minutes away from Glasgow International Airport also offers a new purpose-built shooting range. The Loch Lomond Shooting School provides a beautiful countryside setting in which guests can learn archery, crossbows, air rifle target shooting and clay pigeon shooting. The archery program is open to guests ages 12 and older, and rates start at £25 ($40 USD) per person for 30 minutes.

Set on 850 acres in the Perthshire countryside, The Gleneagles Hotel, the “palace in the glens,” boasts more than 200 rooms and offers three championship golf courses, shooting, fishing, falconry, off-road driving, horseback riding … and archery. The sport is offered to guests ages 8 and older (children under age 10 must be accompanied by an adult), and guests are taught all the correct safety habits. Gleneagles offers top-of-the-line equipment and instructors who work with guests of all skill levels … until they hit the target. A full lesson is 45 minutes and costs £52 ($84 USD) per person, with a cost of £21 ($34 USD) per additional participant (with a maximum of five in a class).

The Torridon, which is nestled among 58 acres of private parkland at the head of Loch Torridon in the Scottish Highlands, takes special pleasure in introducing the ancient sport to beginners, who are often surprised by how well they take to it. One of Britain's foremost “retreat hotels,” this property boasts 18 luxurious bedrooms and an array of outdoor activities, ranging from sea kayaking to mountain biking. Hotel guests of any age can participate in the resort's archery sessions, which are complimentary. Archery is also available to the general public for £20 ($32 USD) per person for three or more people or £25 ($40 USD) per person for one or two participants. With an instructor-to-student ratio of one to eight, all participants are ensured individual attention and complete supervision, no matter what their experience level.

Trump Turnberry, a Luxury Collection Resort,is renowned for its world-class golf, but it also offers a selection of other outdoor pursuits. Located in Ayrshire, just an hour from Glasgow and two hours from Edinburgh, it has a prime coastal location overlooking the Irish Sea. During an hour-long archery class, an expert guide teaches guests the rules and etiquette of the sport, keeping everyone safe and supervised throughout the full lesson. Classes take place in a five-lane, open-faced cabin with a roof … so the region's unpredictable weather never affects the experience. Guests start by learning the proper stance and technique for holding the long bow, and then learn to load, aim and release the arrow themselves. The activity is available for guests ages 8 or older and open to a maximum of six guests at a time. The cost is £35 ($56 USD) per adult and £30 ($48 USD) per child (ages 8 to 12).
