
Award-winning lifestyle hotel, Langham Place, Mongkok, Hong Kong, has been awarded the prestigious Gold level of certification by EarthCheck, the world's leading certifier of travel and tourism organisations, for its continuous environmental improvements over a period of five years or more to secure a sustainable future for its business.
To achieve the accolade, the hotel's environmental procedures are analysed and assessed against EarthCheck's best practice levels. Certification is achieved once an organisation has proven itself to follow through best-practice environmental procedures.
Each year, Langham Place, Mongkok, Hong Kong has to submit a full year of operational data to EarthCheck, benchmarked against the industry standard of Best Practice. A number of key indicators are measured, including energy and water consumption, water saving, total waste production, and community commitment, in response directly to major environmental problems.
“Since our hotel's opening in 2005, we have made a commitment to green initiatives and sustainable practice in all our daily operations and have had environmental management system fully in place. While giving the guests the luxury experience expected at the five-star hotel, Langham Place, Mongkok, Hong Kong has strived to reduce its carbon emissions and carbon footprint through a wide variety of innovative, environmentally-friendly features, ranging from energy-saving heat pumps to recovering heat from chillers and supplying hot water to guestrooms. Its rooftop garden encourages staff to grow their own vegetables, menus are paperless and set up on iPads instead, food waste and soaps are recycled and cooking oils are processed to supply biodiesel to the hotel's enviro-truck, pioneering many of the benchmarks for the industry.
For guests driving with a green attitude, the hotel stepped in 2011 as the first hotel in Hong Kong offering to charge up guests' electrical vehicles for free, via the hotel car park's electric vehicle charger.
In addition, in 2013, the hotel has helped reduce environmental impact by doing the following:
- Carbon Footprint – Through various engineering retrofits and the hotel's Reduce, Reuse and Recycling programmes, its carbon footprint reduced by 3.14% in comparison with 2008.
- Recycling – The hotel saved more than 281 tonnes of rubbish in the landfills through recycling.
- Bio-Fuel Creation – The hotel recycled 827 litres of cooking oil in 2013, transforming it into bio-fuel.
- Paper Saving – By implementing a paperless office environment where possible, the hotel have used 124,550 less pieces of paper in 2013 when compared to 2012.
The hotel also actively partners up with non-profit organisations to support community development. In particular, the donation of excess food to Foodlink Foundation and extra trimmed vegetables to Food Angel, contribute to help those in need.
