Discover Carmarthenshire, the organisation promoting tourism to the south west county of Wales,is on the hunt for a guyrope guru to act as Wales' first camping concierge this summer. The position is being billed as one of the UK's best camping jobs this summer, based at Pembrey Country Park alongside Cefn Sidan- the country's longest beach stretching over eight miles long, boasting a coveted Blue Flag award.
This region of Wales wants to encourage more first-time campers to enjoy the delights of a holiday under canvas. Many people are put off camping by the thought of having to put up tents, pitching in the right location and bringing all the correct kit with them. To help overcome this trepidation will be an on-site camping concierge, someone who knows their fly sheets from their ground sheets and is desperate to put their camping prowess to good use for a paid summer job situated on one of Wales' most picturesque coastal locations.
“Concierges are more frequently found in flashy five star hotels rather than at campsites. However, we always like to offer something a bit different to our visitors in Carmarthenshire and thought we would encourage more campers by providing a free expert to help them with any of their camping queries,” commented Huw Parsons, marketing and tourism manager of Carmarthenshire County Council. “This must be the perfect summer job for anyone interested in tourism and media.”
Based at Pembrey Country Park, the successful applicant will spend a typical working day assisting campsite guests with all of their outdoor living requirements; from helping to find the perfect pitch and solving tent-related queries, pumping up inflatable mattresses and replacing broken tent pegs, to assisting with campfire conundrums and outdoor-cooking challenges. Like a hotel concierge, the successful applicant will be the go-to onsite guyrope guru – brimming with tips and short cuts for all things camping.
“This is certainly the first known 'camping concierge' role in Wales, if not the UK, providing a unique opportunity for those looking for a challenge this summer. Where else can you spend a month camping and get paid for it? Who knows, we may start a trend which sees a sub society of the 'Golden Tent Pegs' members joining the illustrious hotel concierge society of Golden Keys, Les Clefs d'Or,” added Parsons.
The job will run throughout the month of August and the successful applicant will be provided with on site accommodation for him/her and a partner to share, located within a short stroll to the award-winning beach of Cefn Sidan and over 500 acres of epic wood lined parkland to explore; the perfect home for someone looking to get back to the great outdoors and enjoy a dash of adventure this summer.
Applicants need to show a passion for camping, as well as a love for the great Carmarthenshire outdoors and desire to learn more about the surrounding county. Relevant experience in outdoor cooking, pitching in bad / hot weather and knowledge of tent maintenance is also required; as well as strong interpersonal skills given that this will be a very interactive role with holidaymakers. They will also be required to share their experiences through social media and post regular blogs so that they can be in touch with the wider camping community of Carmarthenshire. As such, a good knowledge of social media and excellent writing skills are preferable.
This unusual role will offer the perfect opportunity for an outdoor lover with a sense of adventure and a love of people and places to promote one of the most beautiful and undiscovered corners of the UK. In return, the position offers a one-month contract with an attractive salary, a comfortable home (caravan hooked up with all utilities stationed at Pembrey Country Park), a smart uniform and hamper of Welsh cheese and meats to ease the successful applicant into their role in comfort.
