Fukuoka City

Fukuoka City is gaining attention as Japan's most attractive destination for 'slomads' as the digital nomad community slows down and looks for places to stay put for a few months rather than a few weeks. Fukuoka was the first city in Japan to introduce the Startup Visa (in 2015), an initiative allowing foreign nationals to live in the city long-term while launching businesses or working as freelancers. Numerous digital nomads have been drawn to the 'startup hub of Asia'* by its urban convenience, noted food scene, access to nearby nature, mountains and beaches, affordable living costs and diverse network of coworking spaces and communities. These are some of Fukuoka City's unique spots designed to support this dynamic community.

Engineer Cafe Fukuoka, a public–private initiative at the heart of the Engineer Friendly City Fukuoka program, serves as a practical hub for the city's tech sector. Located inside an historic red-brick cultural hall in the centrally-located Tenjin district, the space is free for engineers to use and open daily between 9am and 10pm. Equipped with high-speed Wi-Fi, technical equipment, reference tools, and work, meeting and event spaces, it was designed to create an engineering ecosystem that provides support, training, seminars and organic opportunities for peer-to-peer collaboration.

For those seeking balance between productivity and the outdoors, SALT is located in the coastal district of Imajuku in western Fukuoka, just five minutes walk from JR Imajuku Station. This beachfront coworking space inspires with its panoramic sea views, flexible seating / space options, events and cultural workshops. Users can drop in for approx. £15 per day, or select monthly and fixed-seat plans including a Nomad Plan from £260 per month. SALT also offers a variety of nearby accommodation options sleeping between two and eight people. Popular among professionals who value balance, SALT's location enables members to naturally shift between focus and leisure time.

Positioned as a global innovation launchpad CIC Fukuoka was developed by the Cambridge Innovation Center and is the organisation's second location in Asia. It opened in April 2025 inside the prestigious new ONE FUKUOKA BLDG. and offers a 3,500sqm campus that includes 143 private offices (accommodating one to twelve people), 40 coworking seats, 17 meeting rooms and a podcast studio. By bringing together domestic and international startups, investors, research institutions and global companies CIC Fukuoka curates an environment that accelerates the rapid growth of startups.

A defining feature of Fukuoka's digital nomad landscape is Colive Fukuoka, a year-round free community for entrepreneurs, creators and remote pros, the registered subscribers already exceeds 1,000.This community platform introduces hotels and coworking spaces to digital nomads. Community members introduce participants to the lifestyle and share insider knowledge of ways of doing business in Fukuoka.  Since launching in 2023, the staying  programme held by Colive Fukuoka in October has attracted global interest, welcoming participants from 57 countries in 2025 alone and holds partnerships with 80 digital nomad and entrepreneurial communities around the world. Between 1st and 10th October 2026 Colive Fukuoka will host a ten-day co-creation gathering programme centered around Japanese values such as ikigai (life purpose) and (the lifelong path of learning and self-cultivation).

Fukuoka's everyday livability resonates strongly with international residents. Known for its compact urban layout, efficient transportation system, comparatively affordable living costs, renowned yatai food culture and proximity to both mountains and sea, the city offers a lifestyle that supports both professional and personal goals. Just 30 minutes drive away is Snow Peak YAKEI SUITE ABURAYAMA FUKUOKA located on Mt. Abura offers 14 rooms of different configurations, steeped in nature with sweeping views of the Fukuoka skyline, while the outdoor pursuits of Nokonoshima Island in Hakata Bay are just a ten-minute ferry from the harbour.
