Issue 23: Empty Islands, Wild Nights & One Helluva Sundowner

get lost Magazine Issue 23 is here, louder, looser and smelling faintly of sunscreen, jungle mud and cheap martinis.

This time we're ditching Thailand's glow-stick chaos and bucket-bar hangovers and steering well clear of the full-moon circus. Instead, we go off-grid. Properly off-grid.

Our special feature slips past the neon and heads for the Eastern Trat archipelago and the so-called Andaman Sleepers, islands where the loudest thing you'll hear is the tide, mangroves outnumber humans, and “nightlife” means a mosquito with ambition.

Think jungle tracks to empty beaches. Fishing boats instead of jet skis. Cold beers instead of fire dancers.

It's Thailand without the hangover.

(Well… mostly.)

Inside Issue 23

First up, long-time troublemaker and editor-at-large Roberto Serrini teams up with our own Justin Jamieson to take on New Orleans at Halloween, which turns out to be exactly as sensible as it sounds.

There are US$1.50 martinis, bizarre costume choices, streets packed with revellers, and somehow they end up in the Halloween parade with the legendary Krewe of Boo.

Chaos ensues. Obviously.

Then we trade beads for dust and head to Botswana, where filmmaker Ben McNamara decides riding a pushbike across one of the planet's most brutal open landscapes is a good idea. It's all sweat, suffering and soul-searching… until he pedals straight into the country's first gin distillery and earns the greatest sundowner of his life.

Worth it.

From there we cool things down in Austria's ski fields (thighs screaming, dignity gone) before wandering the quietly weird and wonderful streets of Hamamatsu, Japan, where every alley seems to hide something delicious, ancient or slightly baffling.

Basically: our kind of place.

Also in this issue

– Why an Explore Worldwide trip might ruin normal holidays forever
– Accommodation so weird they sound made up
– The Hot 5, featuring places that prove we've been visited from space…
– The return of our Photography Comp, which broke our brains and forced us to outsource voting to social media because choosing a winner nearly ended friendships
– And a stack more beautifully off-grid misadventures we probably shouldn't have survived

Still Indie. Still Slightly Unhinged. Still Here.

Backed by legends OM System Cameras and World Nomads, we're now somehow talking to 1.5 million readers worldwide, which feels mildly ridiculous for an independent mag that still believes the best stories start when the plan falls apart and someone says, “Well… stuff it, let's go anyway.”

So here it is.

Let it convince you to book something wildly impractical.

Because safe holidays are forgettable.

And getting lost is kind of the point.

"We're super proud of this latest edition! Roberto and Ben's videos are truly epic and there's such a diverse mix of get lost experiences." - Justin Jamieson, Publisher

“This issue is packed with the kind of stories that make you want to shut your laptop and book a flight. Big landscapes (get me on a plane to Botswana stat), wild cities (I know where I'm spending Halloween this year), and zero hesitation. Honestly, what more do you need? The answer is nothing btw” – Kate Gazzard, Editor
