New highlights, unmissable events and landmark anniversaries — everything you need to know about a region celebrating a decade of bold identity.
• 30 years of the Canal du Midi as a UNESCO World Heritage Site
In 2026, the Canal du Midi will celebrate 30 years since its inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Designed in the 17th century by Pierre-Paul Riquet, this major feat of engineering connects Toulouse to the Mediterranean over more than 240 km. Today, it is enjoyed by visitors on foot, by bike or by boat. A wide programme of events and exhibitions will take place throughout the year to celebrate this iconic site (pages 7 and 8).
• 2016–2026: Occitanie celebrates 10 years
Created from the merger of the former regions Midi-Pyrénées and Languedoc-Roussillon, Occitanie is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Over the past decade, the region has gained strong visibility and international recognition. This success is largely based on an outstanding cultural and natural heritage, represented by 10 UNESCO World Heritage sites. From the fortified city of Carcassonne and the Episcopal City of Albi to the Cirque de Gavarnie and the landscapes of the Causses and Cévennes, as well as the Pont du Gard, the Maison Carrée in Nîmes, Vauban fortifications, the Way of St James and the Massane Forest, Occitanie offers a rich and diverse collection of emblematic places.
• The reopening of the Hôtellerie des Laquets at Pic du Midi
Located at an altitude of 2,620 metres, the Hôtellerie des Laquets will offer, from 2026, a truly unique hotel experience in the heart of the Pyrenees. Connected to the Pic du Midi by a dedicated cable car, this legendary site is reopening after more than 30 years of closure. With 16 panoramic rooms overlooking the mountain peaks, a fine-dining restaurant by chefs Renaud Lamazère and Stéphane Tournié, and a bar with fireplace facing the high mountains, the hotel promises a timeless escape between sky and earth. This exceptional project, combining contemporary design with Pyrenean heritage, has been awarded the Silver Medal – Sustanaible Buiding Occitanie (page 28).
