150 Scottish children get the chance to try skiing or snowboarding for the first time.

New year, new sports! Austria Tourism has partnered up with Snowsport Scotland to offer 150 primary school-age children across Scotland a chance to try out skiing and snowboarding for the first time. “First Tracks”, as the national schools project is called, aims to remove entry barriers and build a new generation of enthusiasts by allowing children to dip their toes into snowsports in an accessible and fun way.

The fully subsidised introductory lessons kick off in late January/early February and take place in artificial snow centres across Scotland. Participating pupils will learn to take their first turns, while also getting glimpses into what skiing in Austria is like. Austria Tourism provides the framework for the later with themed events, educational materials, and competitions which will highlight the Austrian Alps.

First Tracks: Children learn about skiing – and Austria

“It's never too early to start skiing – and with the Olympic Winter Games just around the corner, interest in snowsports is naturally further increasing,” says Martina Jamnig of Austria Tourism. “Austria is renowned globally for its passion for snowsports, from its legendary resorts to its world-leading ski schools. By collaborating with Snowsport Scotland on 'First Tracks', we are investing in the future of the sport and welcoming young Scots to learn about Austria as a destination. We can't wait to see them progress from the artificial slopes of Scotland to carving their turns on the pristine pistes of the Austrian Alps."

Iain Ramsay-Clapham, CEO of Snowsport Scotland, says he's “incredibly excited” to partner with Austria Tourism: “This project is crucial for youth engagement in snowsports. Giving primary school children the chance to try skiing or snowboarding right here in Scotland is vital, and the support from Austria helps us make that dream a reality for these 150 young participants. It's the perfect start to a lifelong adventure on the snow."

Every second Brit wants to try out skiing

“First Tracks” launches at a time when skiing is again on the rise, not just among the youngest. More and more people are prioritising outdoor activities that combine fitness, travel, and time in nature – and skiing fits all three. Research conducted with the Ski Club of Great Britain shows that half of Brits who've never skied would like to try it. Unsurprisingly, young adults are particularly keen, with 85% of 18-24s, 73% of 25-34s, and 66% of 35-44s saying they'd like to give it a go.

Austria has a long-standing history not just as a skiing nation but also as a place for first-timers on the pistes. Our ski schools are regarded among the best in the world, and regions such as Zillertal, Serfaus-Fiss Ladis, Ischgl or Altenmarkt-Zauchensee are just tailor-made for a first dip into winter holidays, with beginner-friendly slopes, cosy huts, and Instagram-worthy views of the Alps at every turn.
