The Grove Cromer: Ninety Years of Family Hospitality and Norfolk Excellence

Visit East of England

Cromer, Norfolk – 2026 — In an era when independent hospitality faces ever-increasing pressures, The Grove Cromer stands as a testament to enduring family values and the pursuit of excellence. This year, the celebrated hotel marks its 90th anniversary, a milestone that speaks to both its resilience and its continued relevance in the British hospitality landscape.

A Heritage Rooted in Vision and Enterprise
Founded in 1936 by Bob and Hilda Graveling, The Grove began as a country house and working farm, welcoming guests to the North Norfolk coast. The couple's commitment to quality—Bob providing fresh produce from the estate, Hilda overseeing every detail of guest care—set a standard that has been maintained through three generations. Bob and Hilda were followed by John and Ann Graveling, and today, Richard and Chris Graveling continue this legacy, blending tradition with innovation.

Sustainability and Modern Comforts
The Grove's ethos remains firmly rooted in sustainability, with much of its produce sourced directly from its gardens—a practice that results in a food mileage of just 0.016 miles. Guests can choose from hotel rooms, self-catering cottages, or glamping, and enjoy two distinct dining experiences: The Garden Rooms, offering two-rosette cuisine, and Sundown, serving Norfolk tapas and pizza in giant tipis. An indoor pool and The Massage Hut complete the offering, ensuring relaxation and wellbeing for all visitors.

Celebrating a Landmark Anniversary
To mark its 90th year, The Grove is hosting a series of events, including an expanded Midsummer Ball featuring The Lee Vasey Band and Cromer Soul Club, a firework display on Cromer's East Beach, and illuminated woodland festivities. Special offers include “90 nights for £90” and complimentary afternoon teas for those born in 1936—a nod to the hotel's founding year.

Recognition and Ambition
The Grove's commitment to excellence has been recognised with numerous awards, including AA Four Stars, AA Two Rosettes, AA Story of the Year, and Silver accolades for Glampsite of the Year, Norfolk Hotel of the Year, eviivo Hidden Gem plus TripAdvisor's Traveller's Choice, and the Norfolk Architect's Award for The Orchard Rooms.

“Our aim is to become the top independent hotel in Norfolk,” says Chris Graveling. “The Grove is always evolving, and we strive to leave a lasting legacy of quality and hospitality for our guests.”
