December 2025 - With the opening of Fever's Machu Picchu: Journey to the Lost City in west London and Manchester, intrepid adventurers can find themselves in the awe-inspiring mountain citadel on their doorstep. This free-roam virtual reality adventure was built in collaboration with historians and 3D specialists to ensure that travellers are treated to a historically accurate feast for their eyes. The rising interest in visiting ethereal places, titled 'Mystic Outlands', has been declared the biggest travel trend for 2026 by Pinterest, with Millennials and Boomers seeking out mystical destinations like ruins shrouded in mists. Travellers looking to experience this remarkable site and trend in person can expect a sensory experience that provides holistic nourishment for the mind, body, and soul, positioning Peru as a destination tapped into the increasing demands of wellness tourism.

Machupicchu is thought to be home to distinctive energy that some refer to as Kundalini, thought to stem to the site's connection to the Pachamama or Earth Mother, where travellers have reported feeling this energy, especially at Intihuatana – a sundial carved from a single piece of rock and the Sacred Rock which features a contour that replicates the shape of the surrounding mountains in honour of the apus, or mountain deities.

Andean culture revolves heavily around cosmology, with cosmovision and the belief that the Earth or Pachamama is connected to all living beings having had continuous impact on the communities who live there.

Incan knowledge has informed the traditional healing techniques and ceremonies of curanderos, traditional Andean healers. Coca leaves were of huge significance and considered mystical in the Incan empire, and are still used today to in reading ceremonies to give clarity for those seeking guidance and looking to rid themselves of heavy energies known as hucha that may be causing emotional distress. This energy clearing activity is also thought to be more effective during important dates on the Inkas Calendar, such as Inti Raymi.

Travellers can also connect and immerse themselves in the Peruvian cosmovision through payment to the earth ceremonies, which include offerings, prayers and the burning of incense and aromatic herbs for her blessings and continued protection. This concerted, mindful effort to appreciate the earth whilst expressing deep desires for achievement and personal life can be hugely beneficial to the participants internal wellbeing, energy, and emotion.

With the opportunity to participate in these ceremonies at the havens of decompression of Belmond Sanctuary Lodge and the newly two Michelin Key awarded Inkaterra Hacienda Urubamba, Peru is quickly establishing itself as a wellness destination with distinct offerings.

The Colca Lodge Hot Springs in Arequipa offer a more conventional wellness retreat but still concentrate on the importance of nature in line with the Andean beliefs of human connections to all aspects of nature. Fed by thermal springs that are rich in minerals such as lithium, which is thought to increase the stability of deep sleep and stabilise moods. Even the design and construction of the pools, with local materials of stone, earth and straw, have been thought to mitigate its effects on the environment. This focus on natural wellness complements the immersive cultural and spiritual experiences found throughout Peru, offering travellers both conventional and traditional approaches to wellbeing

Elsewhere in Peru, indigenous communities such as the Shipibo people in the Amazon, offer travellers a way to immerse themselves in the culture and traditions that keep their communities well and have been preserved for so many years. Plants known as 'Onanyati' are known for their healing and spiritual properties such as the release of strong emotions, alleviating arthritis, blood pressure regulation and other anti-inflammatory properties. The healers also use ikaros, songs and music during healing ceremonies, with these sacred chants helping to realign energy and mental wellbeing. Travellers should still be conscious to respect the community and guidance for healing ceremonies and Ikaros.

With the new Machupicchu VR experience open for adventurers to digitally surround themselves with the magic of the ancient Incan structure, and full-immersion wellness and the search for almost otherworldly places on the rise, 2026 is the time to look to Peru as the destination for holistic wellness and the healing energy that the country has to offer.
