The newest boutique luxury stay in the Byron hinterland, Amaroo, is immersed in nature but just 10-minutes from Byron's beaches and buzzing cafes. Guests can soak up sun-kissed mornings by the pool or unwind after salty days on the coast. Either way, nature is in full bloom when you return home, showcasing Grevilleas, Eucalyptus and Banksias in all their glory. An abundance of wildlife can also be spotted across Amaroo: wallabies and black cockatoos, water dragons and rainbow-coloured birds are frequently spotted basking in the sunshine.
To celebrate the holidays, Amaroo is launching its first-ever Summer Wellness Package. Created in partnership with our favourite hinterland brands, guests staying three days or more can access to a special range of extras. You can choose from decadent beauty treatments from Mukti Organics, mouth-watering bites from much-loved cafe The Woods, or drinks packages by award-winning distillery Cape Byron. Choose one or all three for a truly pampered stay in Byron holiday bliss. To access the Amaroo Summer Wellness deals, book in summer and request the package of your choice.
Amaroo was designed with exclusivity and tranquillity in mind. It comprises four architecturally designed studios that stand alone and one central lounge pavilion with a gourmet kitchen, dining, outdoor decks and sparkling green pool. Guests have the option to book an individual cabin for an intimate getaway or the entire property for up to eight adults and six children. Either way, you have exclusive access to Amaroo's four cabins, lounge pavilions, pool and expansive country gardens.
On arrival, you meander through a country laneway before arriving at an architecturally designed estate, designed by award-winning Shaun Lockyer. Step inside, and you see Amaroo was meticulously built using earthy materials and tones, so that every space is in harmony with the landscape. The owners are committed to the land's ecological history and have created a luxury holiday stay steeped in sustainability.
Making Amaroo even more special: the property is also a working cattle farm with 80 head of Black Angus cattle. Guests can play a part in farm life, from watching the cattle wander paddocks, or collecting eggs from free-range chickens in the gardens, enjoying a picnic by the creek, and honey from the beehive. The property is spread across 213 acres, offering country gardens, bubbling brooks and hidden nooks to escape urban living.
Amaroo opened for its first full year of business in early 2025. Owners Mike and Cathy Tomkins bought the property when it was in desperate need of care. They wanted to restore the land and share it with others. They saw themselves as stewards of the property, responsible for restoring its ecological balance. They spent six years regenerating the land and working with local partners to eliminate invasive plants. In those six years, they have planted an astonishing 50,000 trees.
Operating at 100% water and 70% energy independence, Amaroo also harnesses the power of the sun and relies on the area's abundant rainfall and naturally fed spring creeks. Mike and Cathy have also teamed up with Bangalow Koalas, and together they are planting more trees for koalas to thrive. They are also working with East Coast Bush Regeneration to guide the development of the land for generations to come. This focus on nature is intended to shape every visit for travellers.
Although open to couples for exclusive use, Amaroo is perfect for small groups. The shared central spaces were inspired by the owner's love of bringing family and friends together. Expect a commercial-grade kitchen ready for culinary enthusiasts. Groups can also gather around the wood-fired pizza oven for a casual outdoor cooking. Private outdoor showers among the rainforests or under a starlit sky are another chance to get close to nature. Amaroo also welcomes stays with furry friends: dogs are welcome, with room to roam and the safety of fully fenced areas.
Amaroo can be as relaxing or transformative as you choose, as guests can do as much or as little as they wish. Those seeking slow adventures can make time for leisurely morning walks, afternoon cocktails by the private plunge pool, secluded creek-side picnic spots, or champagne soirees at sunset. Otherwise, you can simply sit back, exhale and allow yourself to be immersed in the beauty of nature, and let the holiday glow wash over you.
