Nagano, Japan (9 December 2025) – Club Wyndham Shirakabaso Shiga Kogen, a ski resort in one of Asia's largest ski areas, has unveiled a dazzling multi-million US dollar refurbishment, transforming the property into a premium, year-round destination.
The resort's 32 rooms have been upgraded with fresh paint, new furniture, soft furnishings, and fixtures in line with a fresh design brief. The room's interior design balances traditional Japanese style with modern minimalism, using natural wood throughout to create a warm, earthy atmosphere. Guests can enjoy the tranquility of traditional tatami mats paired with contemporary Western bedding – a hybrid design that appeals to international travellers seeking cultural authenticity and familiar comfort.
The resort's restaurant has been revitalised, now offering a traditional Japanese and international buffet for breakfast and dinner during peak season, with a pre-set buffet available throughout the rest of the year. Guests can also enjoy the pizza bar, which will offer convenient ski-in/ski-out access during the ski season.
A new whiskey bar, featuring locally produced sake, Japanese whiskey, and craft beers, is set to open just in time for ski season, providing a stylish spot for après-ski relaxation. The resort's onsens (hot springs) and common areas have also been upgraded for enhanced comfort and ambiance.
Ski enthusiasts will appreciate the upgraded ski shop, now equipped with state-of-the-art demo skis, snowboards, and professional repair services to meet all slope-side needs. The lobby shop will offer a curated selection of locally produced snacks and beverages, as well as essential ski gear, ensuring guests have everything they need for their winter adventure.
This snow season, the resort will have onsite, English-speaking professional ski and snowboard guides, ready to assist both beginners and advanced riders. Guests are encouraged to book a guide early in their stay to explore the slopes that best suit their skill level, interests, and preferred style.
The refurbishment was a major project that began in the first summer season after the resort's rebranding and 2024 acquisition by Travel + Leisure Co., a leading leisure travel company providing more than six million vacations to travelers around the world every year. Currently, more than 60,000 members of Club Wyndham South Pacific and Club Wyndham Asia can access the property through their clubs.
“This transformation was a strategic investment in the quality of our club members' experiences in one of the world's best ski destinations. By elevating every touchpoint, we're ensuring that the alpine stay for our Club Wyndham members is not only comfortable but truly unforgettable,” said Warren Cullum, Senior Vice President Operations at Travel + Leisure Co.
Club Wyndham Shirakabaso Shiga Kogen gives guests access to 15 ski areas directly via gondolas, lifts, and ski courses, while three additional ski areas require a short transfer by bus or car. The only international resort in the Joshin'etsu Kogen National Park, it also offers indoor and outdoor onsens (hot spring), a sauna – perfect for winding down after a day of skiing or hiking.
An all-season destination, the surrounding park boasts pristine hiking trails through breathtaking woodlands, sweeping vistas, blue-green lakes, and dynamic volcanic formations, as well as regular sightings of golden eagles, Japanese stoats, and snow monkeys.
Shiga Kogen is the closest major ski area to Tokyo; the trip, which includes a bullet train ride to Nagano Station and a final bus leg, takes only about three hours and twenty minutes.
