In an era where cycling is celebrated not just as sport, but as a holistic wellness experience for all ages, the island hopping route of the Shimanami Kaido across Japan's Seto Inland Sea stands out as a one-in-a-lifetime experience for travellers and cycling enthusiasts of all abilities.
Stretching approximately 70km, the route threads across the islands of the Seto Inland Sea. The Shimanami Kaido links Japan's main island of Honshu (via the city of Onomichi in Hiroshima Prefecture) with the island of Shikoku (via Imabari in Ehime Prefecture), traversing a spectacular chain of bridges across the calm waters of the Seto Inland Sea. The quiet coastal roads, cultural highlights, stunning nature and sea views has earned a place as one of the best cycling routes in the world, combining superb infrastructure with spectacular scenery.
Recent upgrades including new e-bike models, revamped Cycle Oasis rest points, and enhanced signage have made the Shimanami Kaido more accessible than ever. The route has become a symbol of sustainable travel and wellness, drawing riders who seek both adventure and tranquility.
Riders can opt for one way or return rental and usually choose to spread the cycle over at least two days, allowing plenty of time to enjoy the sites and character of each island along the route:
- Onomichi - Start the journey in this nostalgic port town, picking up a rental bike or newly available e-bike from Shimanami Rental Cycle near Onomichi Station (open March- Nov. 8am-7pm, Dec-Feb 8am -6pm).
- Mukaishima is known for its relaxed coastal vibe. Make sure to try a coffee and Setouchi lemon cake at a seaside cafe before crossing the first bridge.
- Innoshima was once home to Japan's famed Murakami pirate clan. Visit Innoshima Suigan Castle, a small museum dedicated to Seto Inland Sea pirates.
- Ikuchijima is famous for its lemon groves (try the lemon gelato!) and contemporary art scene. Visit Hirayama Ikuo Museum of Art or Kōsanji Temple and the Kōsanji Museum, inspired by Pure Land Buddhist temple architecture from the Nara and Heian eras.
- Ōmishima is the spiritual heart of the route, enjoy a moment of contemplation at Ōyamazumi Shrine, a shrine dedicated to Ōyamazumi-no-Kami. Then visit Toyo Ito Museum of Architecture and Tokoro Museum Ōmishima for a more modern take.
- Hakatajima is renowned for Hakata no Shio (Hakata salt) and tranquil island life, enjoy cycling through coastal villages and relaxing at Hakata Beach.
- Oshima offers lush forest roads, dramatic views and access to the world's first triple suspension bridge. Head to the Kirosan Observatory Park for panoramic views over the bridge chain and Seto Inland Sea, perfect for a photo opportunity and a scenic break.
- Imabari - Reward yourself back on the mainland with a relaxing onsen. For reverse journeys rental bikes can be collected from Imabari Itoyama Rental Bicycle or Imbari Station Rental Cycle (both open (open March-Nov 8am-7pm, Dec-Feb 8am-6pm. Bicycle returns are accepted 24/7).
A clearly marked blue cycling line guides you the entire way, with Cycle Oasis rest spots, maintenance terminals and luggage forwarding via Sagawa Express for easy, carefree riding. Offering more than just scenery, the route is a celebration of Setouchi's island lifestyle. Taste fresh seafood donburi, sip citrus-infused drinks and meet local artisans producing salt, ceramics and sake using traditional methods.
Accommodation options along the route range from traditional ryokan to seaside resort-hotels. The hub conveniently located on Ōmishima island is WAKKA which provides accommodation, bike-rental and activities. The cycling concierge can even arrange boat and car taxi delivery of bikes, collect and deliver bikes from alternative locations. There are a range of accommodation options available including a private room, cottage, tent, dormitory and trailers overlooking Ikuchishima island and the Seto Sea.
The experience changes with the seasons: spring brings cherry blossoms along the bridges, summer offers warm sea breezes and citrus harvests, while autumn paints the islands in gold and red. Between March–May and August–November the weather is ideal and the sea breeze refreshing.
The Setouchi Region is located in western Japan and surrounds Japan's largest inland sea.
