Oldest Pub in England Unveils 2025 Christmas Menu - an Historic Feast!

Ye Olde Fighting Cocks

In true Fighting Cocks style, in the spirit of a venue that has welcomed travellers for well over a thousand years, the menu blends classic British Christmas comfort with flavours from further afield.

Alongside the traditional award-winning English Rose turkey crown with all the trimmings, this year's standout dish is the Moqueca – a South American fish stew made with mussels, haddock, salmon and king prawns. This beautifully fragrant recipe has been cooked for generations in Brazil, making it a fitting companion to a pub whose history stretches back more than 1,200 years.

Starters range from duck liver and orange pâté to breaded brie with apple and fennel salad, a mushroom velouté, warm vegetable salad (ve and gf), and smoked salmon. Mains include slow cooked shin of beef, Thai yellow curry (ve and gf), the festive turkey, and of course the Moqueca. Desserts offer a suitably indulgent finale, from bay leaf crème brûlée and traditional Christmas pudding to sticky toffee pudding, cheeses and vegan ice creams.

And Christmas wouldn't be quite the same at Ye Olde Fighting Cocks without its popular Carols 'til Closing sing-along on 18 December when Once in Royal David's City is followed by a hearty rendition of a Fairytale of New York. On Christmas Eve, the hugely popular and talented musical duo, Katie Plus Juan will be ramping up the festive vibes with some clever yuletide mashups.

Set in the historic city of St Albans – only 20 minutes from London – the pub provides the perfect backdrop for anyone looking to immerse themselves in authentic old English Christmas charm. Visitors this season can also enjoy OVO Theatre's atmospheric open-air production of A Christmas Carol in St Albans Cathedral's Vintry Gardens, making St Albans an ideal festive destination.

Whether you are planning an office celebration, a gathering with friends or a cosy family meal, the team at Ye Olde Fighting Cocks welcomes guests from near and far to enjoy a Christmas rich in history, flavour and tradition.

Early booking is recommended, as all meals require a pre-order and December dates fill quickly.
