Finish your festive shopping at Eldon Square, home to 140 retailers including Newcastle's iconic Fenwick department store; John Lewis and big name brands including Apple and Sephora.

1).  A Festive welcome with stunning Christmas Lights

Nothing says Christmas like twinkling lights strung along cobblestone streets, and Newcastle takes its holiday lights seriously. Each year, the city lights up with an impressive display that casts a magical glow across landmarks, streets, and shops. The official light switch on, taking place on Nov 6th, includes live music and performances  and the main light displays can be found at Grey Street, Northumberland Street, and Grainger Street, where the architecture looks extra special over the holidays. Don't forget to stop by Eldon Square and check out their new exciting Christmas lights, with plenty of Instagrammable moments and classic Christmas colours. 

2). Christmas markets with local charm

Newcastle's Christmas markets are some of the best in the UK, providing both unique finds and an atmosphere that's perfect for a seasonal shopping spree. The traditional Christmas Market covers Grey's Monument, Old Eldon Square; Grainger Street; Grey Street and is also expanding into Nelson Street this year to offer more festive shopping. Grab yourself a mulled wine or hot chocolate whilst you shop, or try one of the foodie treats from sausages from Geordie Bangers to mac and cheese from Redhead's Mac'n'Cheese.

Enjoy a festive view of the city from the sky with a ride on a new attraction for this year. A 15-metre Ferris Wheel will be the highlight of the Christmas Village at Old Eldon Square giving you an extra fun way of enjoying your festive stay.

Nothing says Christmas like an outdoor ice rink! Newcastle's ice skating rink is a must-visit for families, couples, and friends alike. The Life Science Centre hosts a large outdoor ice rink that's just a short walk from the city center.  Whether you're an experienced skater or just giving it a try, the festive music and bustling crowd make this an unforgettable experience. 

5). Unique Geordie Christmas traditions

No Geordie Christmas is complete without a visit to Fenwick Newcastle's iconic Christmas window display. Since 1971, this beloved department store tradition has drawn families and holiday shoppers alike to Northumberland Street, where each year's grand reveal kicks off the season with excitement and wonder. Whether you're one of the dedicated fans lining up in November to catch the first glimpse or a family stopping by amidst the holiday bustle, Fenwick's Christmas window has become a highlight of the festive season. 

Every year, Fenwick unveils a unique theme for the display, each more enchanting and intricate than the last. This year's theme is A Christmas Carol featuring scenes from the Dickens classic and what is a return to tradition after more modern offerings in recent years. 

For the fourth year running, a specially composed score has been composed in partnership with the Glasshouse International Centre for Music in Gateshead and performed by the Royal Northern Sinfonia.

A unique arrangement of the classic carol God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen accompanies the display.

6. Warm, welcoming pubs and cosy cafés

Newcastle is known for its nightlife, and at Christmas, the pubs and bars go all out. Traditional pubs like The Old George and The Bridge Tavern are decked out with festive decor, and many offer Christmas-themed drinks. Pop into the quaint, historic pubs such as the Crown Posada for a cosy ambiance, or try out the city's trendier bars such as Mother Mercy for unique, seasonal cocktails.
