Carmines River Lodge

Sussex-based African travel PR specialist, Claire Roadley of Umlingo has been appointed to handle the public relations for Carmines River Lodge, an exclusive new safari lodge opening in June 2026 in Zambia's renowned South Luangwa Valley.

This new villa property is a great fit for Umlingo's growing portfolio of exceptional African hotels and lodges. Global trade sales and marketing will be managed by Ailsa Tavares and her team at Travel Promoters, who will lead international representation for what is expected to be one of Zambia's hottest new openings of 2026.

Taking its name from the Carmine Bee Eater, the lodge pays tribute to its extraordinary location overlooking the world's largest colony of these vibrant birds, which nest along the Luangwa Wafwa, directly opposite the property.

Set on a private 54-acre island between two rivers, Carmines River Lodge offers a rare blend of tranquillity and access. Guests are just a ten-minute drive via pontoon from South Luangwa National Park and 20 minutes from Nsefu Game Reserve, both part of the celebrated “Valley of the Leopards.” This wildlife corridor teems with elephants, big cats, wild dogs, and an astonishing diversity of birdlife, providing year-round sightings in an unspoiled natural setting.

The lodge will accommodate just 12 guests (up to 18 with additional beds) in three beautifully designed two-bedroom villas, each elevated among ancient ebony trees. The villas are positioned for complete privacy and uninterrupted views of the Msandile River. Built with sustainability and style in mind, the architecture blends eco-conscious innovation with contemporary African design, incorporating locally crafted furnishings, recycled materials, and Zambian-made fittings.

Each villa will span around 240 square metres, featuring a central lounge and bar area leading to a private deck and plunge pool. Both bedrooms will include freestanding baths and indoor–outdoor “infinity” showers that open directly to the bush. One villa has been specially designed for mobility-impaired guests, offering lift access and level pathways throughout.

Every villa will have its own personal host and private safari guide, as well as exclusive use of a custom-built 6-seater game vehicle for game drives and a second enclosed vehicle for transfers. Paying homage to the area's abundant birdlife, each villa and vehicle will share a bird name – Owl, Hamerkop and Kingfisher.

Guests can expect exceptional, personalised safari experiences, from walking safaris – a tradition born in South Luangwa – to “red light” night drives designed to observe nocturnal predators with minimal disturbance. Stargazing drives under Zambia's vast night skies will also feature.

Carmines River Lodge will include a Canon photographic studio/media room, doubling as an educational space for guests and visiting conservationists. Families will be most welcome, with a dedicated children's programme offering creative, nature-based activities.

The main lodge area will be the social heart of the property, centred around a Boma with fire pit, an infinity pool and indoor-outdoor dining space. A wine room, boutique, and bar will add to the relaxed elegance, while a gym and in-room spa treatments will cater to wellness travellers. Behind the scenes, a halal kitchen, separate pastry kitchen, and greenhouse will support a “farm-to-table” culinary ethos, ensuring ingredients are fresh, seasonal, and locally sourced.

Sustainability is integral to the lodge's philosophy. Operations will be 100% solar powered, with backup systems for emergencies only. A full water filtration plant and the use of biodegradable amenities reflect a commitment to conservation and responsible tourism.

Access to Carmines River Lodge is via a 70-minute flight from Lusaka to Mfuwe, followed by a scenic 50-minute road transfer.

A launch media trip is planned for June 2026, offering the first opportunity to experience this extraordinary new property.  For media enquiries or to express interest in attending, please contact claire@umlingo.co.uk.
