In a captivating blend of art, storytelling, and sustainability, Bullo River Station has partnered with New Zealand-based textile artist Meg Gallagher to create a unique artwork that celebrates the spirit of the Australian outback, all whilst giving back to it.
The resulting artwork, titled The Rhythm, is now up for bid via Meg's online auction, offering one buyer the chance to own a truly meaningful piece. In line with Bullo River Station's commitment to environmental stewardship and Meg's passion for sustainable living, the auction will also raise funds for the protection and preservation of Australia's native species and ecosystems, with 100% of proceeds going to the Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC) - Bullo River Station's long-standing conservation partner.
Renowned for her detailed use of worn textiles and denim offcuts in contemporary landscape art, Meg Gallagher became Bullo River Station's first artist-in-residence in July of this year. With a former career in denim design and a sustainable approach to materials, Meg connected with the significance of denim in outback Australia as well as Bullo's approach to regenerative agritourism, making her a natural fit for the collaboration.
Whilst on property, Meg drew inspiration from Bullo's natural colour palette and lived the experiences of the onsite team, immersing herself in the vast red-dirt plains, native flora, and the daily rhythms of station life. She gathered materials that carried the very essence of life at the Station: sun-faded green cotton workwear, paisley bandanas, and well-worn denim jeans, each marked by years of use and hard work. Such authentic remnants that were once part of the station team's uniforms now comprise the heart of her latest textile-based artwork.
“My time at Bullo River Station was truly transformative,” says Gallagher. “Immersing myself in its vast landscapes, the stories of its people, and the energy of the land gave me an endless source of inspiration. I've worked with the station team's worn denim and fabrics, even dyeing cotton with Bullo's own red ochre, so the artwork doesn't just depict the outback, it quite literally contains pieces of it.”
“To have this creative journey also support the Australian Wildlife Conservancy makes the project even more meaningful,” she continues. “It's a privilege to create something beautiful that also contributes to preserving the environment that inspired it.”
Back in her Dunedin studio, Meg meticulously re-immersed herself in the experience revisiting sketches, colour swatches, and material samples. The result is a slow-crafted, richly-textured artwork that layers pigment, paint and dye over Bullo-sourced fabrics – a deeply personal piece that captures the rugged beauty and lived history of the Northern Territory.
Meg's residency at Bullo River Station and the upcoming auction highlight a shared commitment between the two partners to fostering cultural expression alongside conservation, and the strong alignment of values has been central to its success.
“We are delighted to support Meg's artistic journey and to see her creative vision come to life through this residency,” says Alexandra Burt, Co-Owner of Bullo River Station. “What makes this collaboration unique and special is that it not only celebrates storytelling and artistic expression but also contributes directly to the protection of Australia's unique wildlife. It's a reflection of our deep commitment to both culture and conservation, values which are central to everything we do at Bullo River Station.”

About Bullo River Station:
Set on 400,000 acres of privately owned countryside at the convergence of the Bullo and Victoria Rivers, Bullo River Station is a working cattle station in the Northern Territory and member of Luxury Lodges of Australia. The station's pristine landscape is carved with gorges and waterfalls, making it one of Australia's most breathtakingly beautiful stations. Encircled by the coffee-coloured waters of the Victoria River and rugged hills inscribed with Aboriginal rock art, the vast property is not only home to around 2,000 Brahman-cross cattle, but also a stunning variety of local fauna species including wallabies, dingoes, wild buffalo, a myriad of native and migratory birds, fish and the omnipresent crocodiles. In 2026, Bullo River Station will be closed for guest stays while an exciting redevelopment of its guest wing and homestead unfolds. The unveiling and reopening of the new guest spaces will take place in May 2027. Cattle operations and conservation work will continue throughout. About Meg Gallagher:
Meg Gallagher is a New Zealand-born visual artist whose work explores contemporary landscapes through layered colour palettes, organic lines, and a sustainable approach to materials. Raised in the rugged beauty of Otago, with early exposure to the arts through her father's role at the local art centre, Gallagher developed a creative voice from a young age. After graduating with First Class Honours in Fashion Design, she was named One to Watch by Vogue Italia and awarded a scholarship to study at Milan's Istituto Europeo di Design. Her career in fashion saw her take on leading roles at brands including Camilla and Marc, Insight, and Ksubi. Today, Gallagher brings her fashion background into her art practice by incorporating denim offcuts and vintage clothing into her work, transforming discarded textiles into textured, organic compositions using natural pigments, dyes, and bleach. Now based in Ōtepoti/Dunedin, her work draws deeply from nature and the landscapes that surround her. With solo exhibitions in Queenstown, Dunedin, Melbourne, Sydney, and Milan, Gallagher has developed an international following of collectors and collaborators. Her practice continues to centre on finding beauty in the overlooked and creating works that are both visually and environmentally resonant.
