According to the latest Longwoods International tracking study of American travelers, 40% of them have changed their leisure travel plans in the past year due to extreme weather such as excessive heat, drought, flooding and hurricanes. These changes included postponing their trip, shortening the trip, changing their itinerary or destinations and canceling their travel.
“While you can't change the weather, U.S. travelers in large numbers are navigating extreme weather events,” said Amir Eylon, President and CEO of Longwoods International. “And 33% of travelers believe extreme weather events will impact their leisure travel plans during the next 12 months.”
With the start of the fall travel season, 53% of travelers planning fall trips report they will be visiting friends and relatives. Other top activities for fall include road trips (43%), visiting a state or national park (29%) and cultural attractions, fall foliage and local festivals, all at 23%.
The survey, supported by Miles Partnership, was fielded August 5, 2025, using a national sample randomly drawn from a consumer panel of 1,000 adults, ages 18 and over. Quotas were used to match Census targets for age, gender, and region to make the survey representative of the U. S. population.
