Celebrating 150 years of the Sydney GPO: The Fullerton Hotel Sydney hosts a night under the stars

The Fullerton Hotel Sydney

The Fullerton Hotel Sydney has culminated a year of celebrations for the 150th birthday of the historic General Post Office (GPO) with a black-tie gala dinner that brought together heritage, community, and a shared vision for the future.

Hosted by renowned Australian Journalist, Mike Munro, guests enjoyed an evening of fine dining, live music, and reflections on the GPO's remarkable legacy, a building that has stood at the heart of Sydney since 1874.

John O'Shea, General Manager of The Fullerton Hotel Sydney, said throughout the year the hotel has celebrated the rich history of the building.

“From activations in the hotel, room packages featuring our heritage wing and the incredibly popular Heritage afternoon tea, we have been honoured to mark this remarkable milestone with Sydneysiders, guests and visitors,” said Mr O'Shea.

“A year of celebration culminated in a memorable gala dinner, the first ever held in the GPO's iconic atrium. The evening brought together a diverse crowd of locals and visitors from across the globe, honouring the GPO's history as Sydney's original communication hub. The celebration was highlighted by the attendance of special guests, including our Guest of Honour - CEO of the City of Sydney, Ms. Monica Barone, and renowned Sydney journalist, Mr. Mike Munro.”

Guests were entertained with live music from Sydney Opera Singer, Josephine Lonergan, accompanied by The Rosemont Strings and Sydney Harpist, Rebekah Chandler. Along with a four-course meal designed by the culinary team at The Fullerton Hotel Sydney to echo the elegance of the Victorian era, reimagined with an Australian twist.

The night concluded with a significant gesture from SINO Group, owner of The Fullerton Hotels and Resorts: an AUD $50,000 donation and a celebration of the hotel's long-term partnership with the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF). Funds will support ILF's work in delivering books, literacy programs, and resources to remote Indigenous communities.

As part of the celebration, the hotel is inviting the public to share their own GPO stories with a photo, whether it's a memory of meeting under the famous clock tower, working in the building, or visiting over the years. The winner of the selected story will be shared on the hotel's social media channels and a night stay in the hotel's Heritage Long Suite (presidential suite), along with a Heritage Tour and Heritage-themed Signature Afternoon tea for two. Stories can be submitted between 1 September and 30 September 2025. The winner will be announced on 10 October 2025. Please send all entries to fsy.marketing@fullertonhotels.com.
