This autumn, visitors to Tokyo can experience the city in a truly unique way through the Tokyo Biennale 2025, an international art festival running from October 17 to December 14, 2025. In Japan, autumn is often celebrated as the “Autumn of Art” or “Autumn of Excursions”. The Tokyo Biennale combines both traditions, inviting visitors to discover Tokyo's culture, history, and communities through art woven into the fabric of the city.
Now in its third edition, the festival will feature works by 38 artist groups from seven countries, presented across 14 venues under the theme “Wander for Wonder.” Unlike traditional art festivals confined to galleries, the Tokyo Biennale is deeply connected to the neighbourhoods where it takes place. Artists collaborate with local communities, creating site-specific works that reveal new perspectives on Tokyo's urban landscape.
Exploring Six Diverse Areas of Tokyo
The festival spans six areas in central-northeast Tokyo, including Ueno, Nihonbashi, Yaesu/Kyobashi, and Marunouchi. Each district offers a different way to engage with the city's rich culture and history:
Ueno – Explore venues within Ueno Park, including the Konpon Chudo (Main Hall) of Kan'ei-ji Temple, originally built in the Edo period, the rarely accessible Aoi no Ma Room, and the garden before the Shibusawa family mausoleum.
Nihonbashi – Discover contemporary artworks set against a backdrop of historic shops and modern architecture.
Kyobashi – Wander through a district known for antiques and fine art, seamlessly blending business and creativity.
Marunouchi/Otemachi/Yurakucho – Experience art in the heart of Tokyo's bustling business hub.
Most exhibitions are free to enter, while two main venues, the Toeizan Kan'ei-ji Temple and the Etoile Kaito Living Building, require admission.
A Festival of Encounters
With projects designed to be experienced on foot, visitors can stroll through Tokyo's neighbourhoods, encountering artworks while uncovering hidden corners of the city. The festival encourages participants to “wander” through the layers of history, architecture, and daily life that define one of the world's most walkable capitals.
