Hamamatsu City

Hamamatsu is a coastal city situated on the western side of Shizuoka Prefecture in Honshu, Japan's main island. It is considered the “City of Music” thanks to its rich musical instrument industry and heritage, and is known for its unagi, a popular dish of grilled freshwater eel served on rice.

Conveniently located halfway between Tokyo and Osaka, Hamamatsu is easily accessible from both major cities in under two hours by Shinkansen. It is here that visitors can enjoy peaceful moments where nature, history, and musical culture merge.

Along with the visually stunning cherry blossoms in spring, Japan's autumn foliage is one of the country's most iconic aspects. Visiting a regional city outside of Japan's popular tourist route in autumn means there are relatively smaller crowds, making it an ideal time for relaxed travel.

In Hamamatsu, the autumn colours typically peak from mid-November to early December.

One of the great things about visiting during this time is that the foliage can be enjoyed over a relatively long period, making it easier to plan your trip.

Here is the perfect 2-day itinerary to enjoy the autumn foliage and cultural attractions in Hamamatsu, Japan.

Day 1 – Relax in a historic town wrapped in autumn colours

Arrive at Hamamatsu Station at midday after travelling from either Tokyo or Osaka. Located a short 3-minute walk from the HR Hamamatsu Station's south exit is Unasumitei, a long-established and locally loved restaurant where you can enjoy a delicious lunch of fragrant grilled eel—a regional speciality.

Hōkō-ji is a historical Buddhist temple nestled in the mountains near Hamamatsu. Dating back to the 14th century, it's ideal to spend a relaxed afternoon here to admire its architectural beauty surrounded by crimson maples leaves. Simply catch the Entetsu Bus for a one-hour journey from Stop 15  at JR Hamamatsu Station.

One of the most unique ways to enjoy Japan's seasonal beauty is through illuminated displays in the evening. From late November to early December, Hamamatsu Castle Park, including the castle and surrounding maple trees are lit up for a magical night-time atmosphere.

After a day of enjoying the historical sites, it's time for a mouth-watering dinner. Located on the 8th floor of the Entetsu Department Store is Sawayaka Charcoal Grill. This family-friendly restaurant chain, that only operates in Shizuoka Prefecture, serves charcoal-grilled hamburg steak using 100% Australian beef—a local must-try.

Day 2 – Journey into the world of music and flowers

There's no better way to spend a leisurely morning than at the family-friendly and educational Hamamatsu Museum of Musical Instruments. The museum showcases around 1,500 musical instruments from around the world, and also features an experience room where visitors can try traditional Japanese instruments such as the shamisen and koto.

After you've tried your hand at traditional musical instruments, it's time for lunch at the Café Restaurant “Hana no Sanpomichi” inside Hamamatsu Flower Park. Here you can relax with floral views where they serve Mikkabi beef and croquette sandwiches as well as ramen, udon and soba noodles.

Spend the afternoon enjoying a relaxing stroll through the gardens of Hamamatsu Flower Park filled with seasonal flowers such as autumn roses and cosmos. There's also a large greenhouse with seasonal exhibits; a fountain show held every 30 minutes and a child-friendly flower train.

It's time to end your trip with dinner at Hamataro Hamamatsu Ekimae, a gyoza izakaya in front of Hamamatsu Station. Hamamatsu-style pan-fried gyoza is known for its abundant cabbage filling which creates a refreshing and light flavour profile, especially when accompanied by the bean sprouts that serve as a plate cleanser.

To enjoy a leisurely 2-day stay in Hamamatsu and its cultural offerings during the autumn season, it's ideal to book accommodation in advance.
