Zagreb Braces for Heavy Traffic as Major Music Event Approaches – Alternative Routes Available


30 June, London - The Ministry of Tourism and Sports of the Republic of Croatia and the Croatian National Tourist Board are warning of heavy road traffic in and around the city of Zagreb from 4-6 July  2025, due to a major music event. The concert is scheduled for Saturday, 5 July in Zagreb, and is expected to attract around 500,000 visitors. It is also important to note that this weekend marks the first peak tourist weekend in July.

Accordingly, the Croatian Automobile Club (HAK) has published alternative travel routes to Croatian destinations for these dates on its official website. Tourists planning to enter or leave Croatia during this period are advised to avoid traveling through the city of Zagreb due to anticipated congestion and possible traffic delays.

The following alternative routes toward the Adriatic are recommended:

For tourists coming from Austria/Slovenia to Kvarner and the southern/eastern parts of Istria:

Graz/Villach – Ljubljana – Postojna – Rupa (entry to HR) – Rijeka (via motorway A7/E61) – destinations in Kvarner (Opatija, Crikvenica, Senj, islands of Krk, Cres, Lošinj, Rab) or Istria (Pazin, Rabac, Labin). This route can also be continued toward other parts of Istria and further from Rijeka via motorway A6/E61 to Bosiljevo 2 and then A1/E65 to Zadar, Šibenik, Split, and Dubrovnik.

For tourists from Austria/Slovenia to northern and western Istria:

Graz/Villach – Ljubljana – Postojna – Koper – Kaštel (entry to HR) – Umag – Poreč – Rovinj – Pula, or

Ljubljana – Postojna – Kozina – Starod – Pasjak D8 (entry to HR), then on to Kvarner, Crikvenica, and the islands (via motorway A7/E61 and D8). This route can also lead to other parts of Istria via motorway A9/E751 – Učka Tunnel (motorway A8/E751 under construction) or via D66 (Pula, Labin, Opatija, Rijeka).

For tourists from Serbia to Istria and northern Adriatic:

Bajakovo (entry to HR) – Slavonski Brod – Nova Gradiška – Popovača (exit from motorway A3/E70) – Sisak – Petrinja – Glina – Gvozd – Vojnić – Karlovac – continue on motorway A6/E61 to Rijeka, Istria, or motorway A1/E65 to Zadar, Šibenik, Split, and Dubrovnik. Upon reaching Vojnić, travelers can take state road D1 through Lika by turning towards Slunj.

For tourists from Serbia to the southern Adriatic:

Bajakovo (entry to HR) – motorway A3/E70 to Babina Greda/Slavonski Brod/Nova Gradiška – travel is recommended through Bosnia and Herzegovina using border crossings at Slavonski Šamac, Slavonski Brod, Svilaj, or Stara Gradiška.

For tourists from Hungary west of Barcs to Kvarner and the southern/eastern parts of Istria:

Nagykanizsa – Maribor – Ljubljana – Postojna – Rupa (entry to HR) – Rijeka (via motorway A7/E61) – destinations in Kvarner or Istria. This route can also continue to other parts of Istria and on to Rijeka via motorway A6/E61 and then A1/E65 to southern coastal destinations.

For tourists from Hungary west of Barcs to northern and western Istria:

Nagykanizsa – Maribor – Ljubljana – Postojna – Koper – Kaštel (entry to HR) – Umag – Poreč – Rovinj – Pula. This route allows travel to other parts of Istria as well.

For tourists from Hungary east of Barcs to Istria and the northern Adriatic:

Option 1: Virovitica (entry to HR) – Suhopolje – Daruvar – Garešnica – Kutina (onto A3/E70) – Popovača (exit from A3/E70) – Sisak – Petrinja – Glina – Gvozd – Vojnić – Karlovac – then continue on A6/E61 to Rijeka/Istria or A1/E65 to southern destinations.

Option 2: Beli Manastir (entry to HR) – Osijek – Slavonski Brod – Nova Gradiška – Popovača (exit from A3/E70) – then as in Option 1.

For tourists from Hungary east of Barcs to Dalmatia south of Split:

Option 1: Virovitica – Kutina (join A3/E70) – Slavonski Brod/Nova Gradiška/Babina Greda – then travel through Bosnia and Herzegovina via border crossings at Slavonski Brod, Svilaj, Stara Gradiška, or Slavonski Šamac.

Option 2: Beli Manastir – Osijek – Babina Greda – then travel through Bosnia and Herzegovina using the same border crossings.

Recommended return routes from the Adriatic:

From southern/eastern Istria and Kvarner to Slovenia/Austria/Hungary:

Rijeka (via A7/E61) – Rupa (exit from HR) – Postojna – Ljubljana – then toward Maribor/Nagykanizsa or Graz/Villach.

From northern/western Istria to Slovenia/Austria/Hungary:

Kaštel (exit from HR) – Postojna – Ljubljana – then toward Maribor/Nagykanizsa or Graz/Villach.

From Istria and northern Adriatic to Serbia or eastern Hungary (east of Barcs):

Karlovac – Vojnić – Gvozd – Glina – Petrinja – Sisak – Popovača (join A3/E70) – continue to destinations in Serbia or Hungary.

From the southern Adriatic to Serbia or eastern Hungary (east of Barcs):

Return through Bosnia and Herzegovina is recommended.
