Iceland's first cascading waterfall lagoon opens on The Golden Circle

Laugarás Lagoon

June 2025…/ Soak in Iceland's first cascading waterfall lagoon, and in winter, marvel at the Northern Lights dancing overhead. Laugarás Lagoon opens this summer along the banks of the Hvítá River in the village of Laugarás, a charming location known for its lush greenery, geothermal activity, and local farms.

This isn't just another geothermal pool. Developed by Mannverk, owned by Norverk, and operated by Laugarás Lagoon ehf., the lagoon is making history. A striking 6,618mm water feature transforms the traditional bathing experience. The architectural vision by T.ark Architects with engineering by Efla was designed to blend into the natural surroundings; large glass panels and locally sourced wood provide uninterrupted river and landscape views.

What makes this experience different from any other in Iceland?

Forget everything you think you know about Icelandic lagoons. Laugarás spans 1,000m² of therapeutic waters maintained at a perfect 38 to 40°C, unfolding across two levels in a design that includes a collaboration with Hildiberg Lighting Design and modern, clean interiors by Anthony Bacigalupo working with T.ark Architects.

A secluded grotto is designed for ultimate comfort and relaxation. Find your zen in two saunas - one dry, one wet - designed by T.ark. Positioned among thick forests, these sanctuaries offer stunning views of Iceland's landscape over the banks of the Hvíta River. Plunge into the refreshing cold pool before returning to the warm embrace of geothermal waters. Two swim-up bars ensure total refreshment without ever having to leave the water.

Where Iceland's culinary future is being redefined

Meet Gísli Matt, the chef who's bringing his revolutionary approach from the acclaimed SLIPPURINN (2012-2025) in Vestmannaeyjar to Laugarás. This is one of Iceland's most celebrated chefs creating something entirely new.

At Ylja Restaurant, meaning 'warmth' in Icelandic, he's crafting a seasonal menu using wild Icelandic herbs, seaweeds, berries, and ingredients sourced from local farms, fisheries, and geothermal greenhouses. This is cooking rooted in tradition but shaped by modern techniques, with many dishes prepared over open fire. Every element focuses on sustainability: fermentation and preservation minimise waste while supporting nearby farmers and producers in a circular food system that respects the land.

The restaurant seats up to 80 indoors with additional outdoor space. Book the private room for up to 38 guests, featuring artwork by Icelandic artist Sigmundur Freysteinsson, Wi-Fi, and projection capabilities. The grab-and-go section has you covered for quick meals, too.
