With an unprecedented £25 million investment, this marks the largest single government grant ever awarded to a UK zoo, reinforcing Twycross Zoo's commitment to tackling the global extinction crisis.

Rebecca Biddle, PhD - AMAZING TALKING HEAD
Chief Conservation Officer, Twycross Zoo
Vice Chair, European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA)

Dr. Rebecca Biddle is an accomplished conservation biologist and strategic leader, currently serving as Chief Conservation Officer at Twycross Zoo. With a career spanning over 15 years in international conservation, zoo leadership, and ecological science, Rebecca brings a combination of academic rigour, field experience, and visionary planning to the global fight for biodiversity.

Rebecca's tenure at Twycross Zoo began in 2021, promoted to Chief Conservation Officer in 2024, she oversaw a multidisciplinary team of 70 staff across animal management, veterinary services, research, education, and conservation. She led the creation and publication of Twycross Zoo's ambitious 2023–2030 Conservation Strategy, shaping the institution's future as a force for global species survival.

Prior to Twycross, Rebecca spent over a decade at Chester Zoo in various capacities. As a Conservation Scientist, she developed and managed international field programs focused on critically endangered species, including black rhinos, jaguars, and parrots. She has coordinated zoo-based conservation efforts across 25 countries, contributing to global standards in ex situ population management, conservation planning, and education. She has led conservation expeditions and community engagement initiatives in Ecuador, India, and Madagascar.

Beyond her institutional leadership, Rebecca plays a vital role in shaping European and global conservation policy and practice. She serves as Vice Chair of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) and Chair of its Population Management Advisory Group. Her specialist expertise includes key appointments such as:

  • EEP Coordinator for the Ecuadorian Amazon parrot
  • Vice-EEP Coordinator for the eastern black rhino
  • Former EEP Coordinator for jaguars and blue-throated macaws
  • Core Member of the EAZA Parrot and Rhino Taxon Advisory Groups
  • Scientific Advisor to The Amazona Lilacina Foundation in Ecuador
  • Board Member for Global Conservation Network and Amphibian Ark
  • Member of the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA) Field Conservation Committee

Rebecca has also contributed as a lecturer and mentor, sharing her knowledge with future conservation professionals through the EAZA Academy and academic programmes in Zoo Conservation Biology.

Through her integrated approach to conservation—combining science, education, leadership, and advocacy—Dr. Rebecca Biddle is helping shape a future in which both wildlife and people can thrive.
