As sustainable travel increasingly influences the choices of discerning holidaymakers, The Gambia Experience is proud to highlight two of its popular boutique properties – Ngala Lodge and Leo's Beach Hotel – for their commitment to reducing energy consumption and lowering their carbon footprint.
Ngala Lodge: Embracing Solar Power for a Greener Future
Set above a small, secluded beach with magnificent views over the Atlantic Ocean near Fajara, Ngala Lodge – a boutique, adult-only hotel renowned for its luxurious 25 suites and fine dining within its romantic al fresco restaurant - is working with Greenlink Gambia Ltd, a leading renewable energy company to implement a solar energy system. Ngala has recently installed 58 solar panels, with another 140 planned for the next phase of the rollout. This ambitious effort aims to bring the lodge close to full grid independence, relying almost entirely on solar energy and minimising the use of backup generators.
“This is about more than clean electricity,” said Ngala owner, Peter Engels. “It's a holistic approach to sustainability – using energy efficiently, intelligently managing resources, and ensuring guests enjoy a seamless experience while we move towards a greener future.”
Leo's Beach Hotel: Boutique Sustainability in Brufut
Located in Brufut, this small and contemporary family-run hotel offers six guest rooms in a secluded setting. Built using eco-friendly techniques, it is recognised for its modern design, excellent service and mouthwatering cuisine, with spacious tropical gardens overlooking the ocean from its elevated position.
With a strong sustainability ethos, Leo's Beach hotel is powered by an 18.5 kW photovoltaic system that supplies approximately 80% of its electricity needs, supplemented by a solar water heater for a consistent, low-impact energy supply.
All wooden furniture has been crafted in local carpenters' workshops, including the SOS-Children's Village Training and Production Centre at Bakoteh.
Further efforts include the elimination of single-use plastics in bathrooms and introducing refillable soap dispensers in showers. Plastic straws are banned in favour of biodegradable alternatives, and reusable glasses are used throughout the property.
Exclusive Hotels
Both properties are available exclusively through UK tour operator The Gambia Experience, which offers tailor-made packages that include a choice of direct daytime flights and upgrades to Banjul, private transfers and in-resort support from its team of local representatives. Prices start from £1249pp.
