Visit La Palma

This June, La Palma, the unspoiled gem of the Canary Islands, invites British travellers to embrace the Atlantic, as it celebrates World Ocean Day on the 8th June with a splash of adventure, a touch of tranquillity, and a warm local welcome. Tucked away on the western fringe of the archipelago, La Palma, affectionately known as Isla Bonita, or The Beautiful Island, offers a glorious mix of wildlife encounters, volcanic seascapes, and rugged charm, far from the crowds.

Close Encounters of the Fin-Tastic Kind

You don't need to be David Attenborough to spot whales and dolphins around La Palma. For those who want to get up close, but not too personal, there are boat tours to guide visitors through the Atlantic theatre where rorquals and dolphins often steal the show.

Diving into the Deep End – Volcanic Adventure Beneath the Waves

La Palma's underwater world was recently re-sculpted by the 2021 volcanic eruption, creating dramatic new lava formations, underwater caves, and tunnels now colonised by all manner of marine oddities. Think Canarian lobsters tucked into crevices, tropical anemones, and ancient fish species peeking out from black volcanic rock. Las Cruces de Malpique, where 40 stone crosses rest on the seabed near Fuencaliente Lighthouse is not to be missed.

Natural Pools & Wild Spas – Nature Does It Better

La Palma offers natural dream-like volcanic pools such as Charco Azul, where calm turquoise waters shimmer beneath banana plantations, with facilities that include showers, trampolines and a beach bar. Up north in La Fajana, a trio of natural pools sits carved into the rocky coastline—perfect for floating about in the fairytale land, while Charco Los Erizos charms with serene seclusion and storied cave-houses nearby.

Beach Days and Surf's Up

Puerto Naos, La Palma's largest beach, boasts black volcanic sand laced with green flecks of olivine and top-tier facilities. It even offers night diving for the brave hearted. Meanwhile, Nogales Beach is perfectly placed for catching waves, with its wild Atlantic rollers and epic cliff backdrop.
