Celebrate Father-Child Businesses This Father's Day

Mindy Bianca Public Relations

One way that kids can show dads that they really love them is to join the family business. That's been the case for several long-standing businesses found throughout our client destinations. Ahead of Father's Day, we're sharing a few examples of popular local business in which fathers have joined forces with their children to serve their local communities and visitors alike.

Sunset at the Palms (Negril, Jamaica)

Ian and Cathy Kerr purchased a 10-acre resort nestled in a jungle-like setting in Negril, Jamaica, in 2003. The Jamaican couple set out to transform the resort into 85 treehouse-style guest rooms and named it “Sunset at the Palms.” The Kerrs' two daughters, Laura and Amy, joined their parents to learn the operations and market the resort. The family works together to offer visitors a unique, all-inclusive, adults-only stay. The resort is focused on preserving and protecting their natural environment and has earned Green Globe certification. Beyond Sunset at the Palm's lush gardens, guests can enjoy Caribbean fusion dining, a pristine beach and incredible sunsets.

Reel Surprise Charters (Orange Beach, Alabama)

Reel Surprise Charters is a family-owned charter fishing business in Alabama's Beaches. Captain Randy Boggs purchased his first vessel, a 38-foot fishing boat, in Orange Beach back in 1999, and that's when he met his wife, Susan, a charter agent from Texas. Together, they launched a business that offered a range of fishing experiences, from quick trips trolling for mackerel to deep-sea charters led by a crew of local expert anglers. Among the newest charter captains is Boggs' 19-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, who grew up in the family business and always knows where the fish are biting. Beyond charters, the family operates Reel Surprise Marina, a boutique harbor with 54 boat slips.

Chaney's Dairy Barn (Bowling Green, Kentucky)

Chaney's Dairy Barn is a family-owned dairy farm that has been serving its delicious milk and ice cream in the Bowling Green community since 2003. Carl Chaney, along with his wife and three children – Jessica, James Neale and Elizabeth – established the Dairy Barn as a way to keep their family farm operating. (The original dairy farm belonged to Carl's father, James Riley Chaney, who began milking Jersey cows in 1942.) In addition to a full array of ice cream flavors, visitors can enjoy lunch, dinner, a gift shop, playground and self-guided farm-tour. During the tour, guests can see how the farm's Jersey cows are milked by a specialized robotic milker. Chaney's is one of only three farms in Kentucky using this state-of-the-art technology.

NOËL Family Distillery (Donaldsonville, Louisiana)

Since the late 1800s, the Noël's have been among the Louisianans producing the highest quality sugarcane products in Louisiana's Sweet Spot, Ascension Parish. With sugarcane fields in their roots, Chip Noël and his daughter Nataile decided to open a distillery in their hometown of Donaldsonville in 2023. Chip, the visionary and master distiller, is a former jet pilot with a taste for the sweet things in life. Natalie is a marketer with a love of product development, tequila and craft cocktails. Together, they produce and distribute small-batch rums, tequila and vodka, working with local farmers to source their ingredients, including the local Louisiana sugarcane featured in their rums.

Bourgeois Meat Market (Thibodaux, Louisiana)

Bourgeois Meat Market has been serving Lafourche and Terrebonne parishes in southeast Louisiana (less than an hour's drive from New Orleans) for more than 100 years. Opened in 1891, the now-legendary meat market has been passed down from one father/son duo to the next. Today it's run by Beau Bourgeois with the help of his dad, cousins and other family members. It is the go-to meat market for patrons looking to get their fix of local delicacies including boudin, smoked sausage, cracklins, hogshead cheese, and the house specialty, Bourgeois beef jerky.

B&B Country Meats (Frostburg, Maryland)

Bernie Garlitz opened B&B Country Meats, a local butcher shop,  in Frostburg, Maryland, in 1981, but his family has had roots in Allegany County, The Mountain Side of Maryland, since the late 1600s. Garlitz's ancestors survived by hunting and trapping, and then eventually began raising livestock. Their food-sourcing practices and plenty of family recipes have been passed down for generations. When son Ryan was old enough, he joined Bernie at the shop and began perfecting the family tradition. Their signature bologna has become a regional staple that can now be shipped all over the country. It's a melting-pot recipe originating from the German, Italian and Polish immigrants who once lived together in coal camps in this mountainous region of the Mid-Atlantic.

Shenandoah Wine Tours (Edinburg, Virginia)

In 2019, Luther Santiful began operating Shenandoah Wine Tours so visitors can safely travel to and among Shenandoah County'swineries and breweries. His son, Eric, joined the business in 2021. Together, they offer individuals and groups a five-hour excursion to visit three to four wineries, breweries or a combination of both. Participating wineries include Cave Ridge Estate Winery, Kindred Pointe Winery, Muse Vineyards and Wolf Gap Vineyards and Winery. And to add a little extra comfort on the journey, the father-and-son duo include complimentary waters and a deluxe snack box with gluten-free and vegetarian options. Tours are available Wednesdays through Sundays from noon to 5 p.m.

Jon Henry General Store (New Market, Virginia)

Father-and-son duo Alvin and Jon Henry opened Jon Henry General Store in 2018 in New Market, Virginia. The store originally served as an outlet for the Henry family to sell their excess produce and beef in Shenandoah County, but now it works with more than 200 regional farmers to keep its shelves, coolers and freezers stocked throughout the year. The Henrys focus on selling an array of local products along with items for people who need grain-, red meat- or dairy-free foods or who are on plant-based diets. Jon Henry General Store is located in the town's oldest building, which dates to 1802, and revitalized its original use as a general store with a modern twist.
