SeaLink Northern Territory has officially recommenced ferry services between Groote Eylandt, Bickerton Island and Numbulwar, following the successful completion of final water trials by its newly refurbished vessel, Phoenix, last week.

After a year-long pause following Tropical Cyclone Megan in 2024, the return of this essential transport service restores a vital link for the Anindilyakwa community, supporting access to family, culture, health care, education, and economic opportunity.

To celebrate the milestone, SeaLink NT, in collaboration with the Groote Eylandt Aboriginal Trust (GEAT), hosted a special community launch event. Traditional Owners, GEAT Board members, and local community leaders joined SeaLink crew and staff, and local residents for a cultural celebration at Bickerton Island, which included cultural performances, morning tea, and excitement as locals boarded Phoenix for rides around the bay.

“What an uplifting and joyful occasion to see the Phoenix arrive at Bickerton Island and be met with open arms by the Milyakburra community,” shared Percy Bishop, Managing Director, Groote Broadcasting/Anindilyakwa Radio.

“Culture is Country. Culture is Community. Culture is Connection. SeaLink plays an integral role in keeping our people connected and our culture strong,” Mr Bishop said.

Etienne Raubenheimer, General Manager of SeaLink Northern Territory, added: “We are thrilled to resume this essential service and deeply grateful for the community's support throughout this journey.”

“The welcome we received was incredibly moving and underscores the importance of our partnership with GEAT and the Anindilyakwa people,” Mr Raubenheimer said.

Phoenix, which underwent significant upgrades in Brisbane, has been fully refitted to meet the unique operating conditions of the region. The vessel now features enhanced passenger seating for 36 guests, a new custom-built bow ramp for easier boarding, and upgrades to air conditioning and luggage storage—including a 300-litre fridge for passenger groceries.

Major mechanical works included a complete rebuild of the twin Caterpillar C18 engines and Kamewa FF375 jet units, offering improved efficiency and reliability. With a cruising speed of 21 knots and top speed of 31 knots, Phoenix can accelerate from 0 to 30 knots in just 43 seconds. Additional upgrades included a new generator, advanced navigation systems, and comprehensive onboard safety equipment. At 18 metres long with a shallow 90cm draft, the Phoenix is ideally suited for safe and easy beach access in the area.

The vessel's name will eventually be updated in collaboration with Traditional Owners to reflect the cultural heritage and significance of the region.

This launch follows the recent signing of a seven-year contract extension between SeaLink and GEAT, securing the future of ferry and bus transport services for the Groote Eylandt community through to 2030.

SeaLink remains committed to empowering regional and remote communities through safe and reliable transport services across the Top End.
