This tiny red house, a traditional Swedish cottage known as The MoonHouse, will soon reach its destination. After launching on 15 January, this miniature red cottage, symbolizing calm and authenticity, is scheduled to land on the Moon on June 5 at 09:24 PM CET.

From Västerås to the Moon: A dream turned lunar mission

The cottage's landing site will be in the Mare Frigoris lunar region— the Sea of Cold. This event marks a significant moment as the cottage, stuga in Swedish, is set to become the first house ever on the Moon, representing the culmination of an artistic, technical, and symbolic adventure conceived 26 years ago by Swedish artist Mikael Genberg.

Imagined by Mikael Genberg and carried aboard the Japanese ispace space mission, The MoonHouse has travelled through space for over four months. Transported by the TENACIOUS rover, the miniature cottage will be gently deposited on the Moon by the RESILIENCE lander. Originating from Västerås, this project is both an artistic gesture and a nod to our universal need for home. The chalet symbolically looks towards Earth, our common home.

Susanne Andersson, CEO of Visit Sweden, shared her thoughts, stating, "The idea that a symbol so dear to our culture is about to reach the Moon fills us with pride and admiration". She added, "It embodies both the spirit of Swedish innovation, its openness to the world, and its ability to explore new avenues, guided by a bold curiosity".

Visit Sweden is officially mandated by the Swedish government to promote Sweden as a tourist destination, with a vision for Sweden to be the world's most sustainable and attractive travel destination by 2030, based on innovation.

Sweden, more accessible than the Moon

While The MoonHouse becomes an extraterrestrial ambassador for the Swedish way of life, the real stugor are very much terrestrial. Sweden is, in fact, more accessible than the MoonFound across Sweden, these red cottages invite you to slow down, reconnect with nature, and discover simple, warm hospitality.
