Highland Wildlife Park is a gateway to the natural world where people can experience nature, learn about the challenges facing wildlife and how they are working to save animals from extinction. Scotland's Wildlife Discovery Centre is now open to explore, with three new buildings, featuring an interactive exhibition, a hilltop den where you can learn about the charity's conservation work and new classrooms to provide space for local communities to engage with the natural world.
The park is open every day of the year and is home to over 200 amazing and endangered animals, including European elk, bison, Scotland's only polar bears, snow leopards, and native Scottish species like red deer and Scottish wildcats. Their team of discovery rangers are on hand throughout the day to bring you fascinating animal facts, stories and behind-the-scenes insight to how Highland Wildlife Park cares for the animals you love.
Also new for summer 2025 is The Very Hungry Caterpillar ™ trail - Saturday 28 June – Sunday 31 August 2025. Step into the enchanting world of Eric Carle's beloved story, brought to life across the grounds of Highland Wildlife Park! This delightful family-friendly trail invites visitors of all ages to follow the journey of the iconic caterpillar as he munches his way through nature while discovering interactive activities and educational surprises along the way.

Experience this ancient forest 8 metres high up in the tree canopy as part of the Red Squirrel Trail - perfect for little adventurers (aged 3+) right through to grandparents.

3. The Loch Insh Outdoor Centre, Kincraig, Kingussie
Even dogs can join in some of the fun at The Loch Insh Outdoor Centre, on a kayak and paddleboard session. Loch Insh Outdoor Centre sits in the foothills of the Cairngorm Mountains, at the lower end of Glen Feshie offering a wide range of multi-sport activities on the loch for the whole family. Take your pick from 1.5 hour canoeing, kayaking or sailing which cost from as little as £20, as well as the more family friendly pedalos which you can hire for £40 for up to 6 people. 1.5 hour paddleboard hire costs from £24.
Or for an extra special experience why not join a river trip from Kingussie to Loch Insh following the beaver trail with guided trips costing £60 per person (4 minimum)
There is no charge for dogs joining their owners on a kayak and paddleboard or yachting session but pet owners need to be responsible for ensuring their pet is safe on the water.
For the more adventurous the Jungle Float will be out on the water from 1st May at £15 per person for 1.5 hours.
If you don't fancy getting wet, there is a dry ski slope operating all year round for skiing, snowboarding and tubing and there are mountain bikes to hire, with a half-day bike hire costs £18 for children or adults £20, or Archery session is £22 per person (1hr).

4. Strathspey Railway, Aviemore
Take the whole family on a nostalgic train journey aboard a steam train with Strathspey Railway to savour the sights, sounds and smell of a bygone era. Journey through the stunning scenery between Aviemore - Boat of Garten - Broomhill. The return trip lasts around 1 hour and 40 minutes, departing from Aviemore and visiting Boat of Garten and Broomhill stations before returning to Aviemore. These trips are usually steam-hauled but are subject to change.
The Aviemore to Broomhill is timetabled to run and costs £24.50 with Senior ticket for over 60's costing £22.50, Child aged 5 - 15 years old cost £14.50 and under 5's go free. There is a family discount ticket for £55 (2+2).
Fancy an upgrade for an extra charge, they also offer, First-Class travel, and have an Observation carriage. You can even enjoy a Light Lunch experience or indulge in Afternoon 'Steam' Tea.

7. A beekeeping taster session at Rowan Tree Country Hotel & Restaurant near Loch Alvie
Did you know that the Rowan Tree Country Hotel has its own apiary? It is managed by Tamasina, who is a qualified beekeeper and offers tours to people interested in the secret life of bees.
She will give you an overview of how the bee colony operates, and the hive will be opened carefully to show the bee family and how industrious they are. Did you know that in an average hive there are 60,000 bees? It takes 12 worker bees their entire lifetime to make one teaspoon of honey, and the bees only live for about 6 weeks in the summer.
Beesuits and gloves will be provided, but you will need to wear your own stout footwear. Wellies or hiking boots will work.
£50 per person, up to two people per tour. Responsible children aged 10+ can also participate.
It can be booked by hotel guests or non-residents. Subject to appropriate weather and conditions.

Highland Folk Museum is a place where you can step back in time and experience life in the Highlands from 1700s to the 1950s. They have over 35 historical buildings onsite for you to explore and discover how people in the Highlands lived, worked, went to school, and enjoyed their leisure time. Killiecrankie Zip Park Ltd is an adventure zip park set in the Valley of Killiecrankie.
The zip park was set up to offer an alternative adventure in the Perthshire area for thrill seeking families, couples, solo adventures and groups.
The course links a series of 9 zip lines with two crossing over the River Garry.
The Killiecrankie Zip Park or Killie Zip is a new and exciting adventure of zipping through the trees and across the River Garry in the stunning valley of Killiecrankie. Right in view of our bungee jump platform and giant swing.
Zip from tree to tree through the stunning valley of Killiecrankie and across the mighty River Garry at heights of up to 30m.
