Hoshino Resorts, one of Japan's leading hospitality groups, has revitalised interest in a ski resort in Gunma Prefecture's Yubukiyama National Forest for visitors to experience the grandeur of untouched nature in “The Ultimate Powder Field.”

Tanigawadake Tenjindaira Ski Resort, which Hoshino Resorts began operating in March 2022, was rebranded to “Mt.T” in December 2024 to better convey its full appeal to ski enthusiasts as well as to promote a new image of Mount Tanigawa.

Within two hours from Tokyo by bullet train and bus, "Mt.T" reflects the ski resort's surrounding areas that start with the letter "T," such as Mount Tanigawadake, Tenjindaira, Tajirizawa, and Takakurayama.

Despite being less than 2,000 meters in elevation, it offers views as dramatic as 3,000-meter-high peaks, thanks to its steep cliffs and crisscrossing mountain ridges.

Both domestic and international ski enthusiasts not only love the pristine powder snow but enjoy the thrilling challenge of skiing down steep and dynamic terrain.

Due to the influence of both the Sea of Japan and Pacific Ocean climates, Mount Tanigawa receives an abundance of exceptional powder snow, and is known as one of Japan's top snow zones, boasting a total annual snowfall of 15 meters.

Mount Tanigawa features a vast and extreme backcountry* area. The ravines with slopes ranging from 30 to 50 degrees offer a variety of landscapes which is sure to impress even advanced backcountry enthusiasts.

*For those venturing into Mount Tanigawa's backcountry for the first time, it is highly recommended to join a tour led by a guide who is familiar with the area.

Mt.T by Hoshino Resorts offers demo centres equipped with fat skis and snowboards, with a wide selection of rentals from VECTOR GLIDE, a leading Japanese brand for powder skiing and snowboarding.

Rental equipment for essential backcountry safety gear is available, including backcountry access beacons, shovels, probes, and backpacks. This ensures peace of mind for visitors who forget or damage their own gear during their backcountry ascent.

Information on avalanche and other danger levels is provided daily at the ropeway entrance. As of the 24-25 ski season, a free service to download the GPS app "Yukiyama” allows visitors to track their location even when entering backcountry areas. The resort has also installed beacon checkers and are actively training personnel for avalanche management.

Furthermore, the town of Minakami, where Mount Tanigawa is located, is home to the largest hot spring resort area in Gunma Prefecture, allowing visitors to enjoy the expansive powder areas while staying in the hot spring village, which offers an array of dining attractions, including izakayas (Japanese pubs) that are within walking distance.

Mt.T is easily accessible via the Joetsu Shinkansen, reaching Jomo-Kogen Station in about 1 hour from the Tokyo metropolitan area. Then, using a rental car from Jomo-Kogen Station, visitors can reach Mt.T in about 30 minutes, as well as the Minakami Onsen area.

From Jomo-Kogen Station, JR Rent-A-Car is available, and inbound visitors can make reservations in advance when they purchase the JR EAST PASS through the website. The Jomo-Kogen Station office also provides vehicles equipped with studless tires and four-wheel drives for snowy roads.
