As the National Forest marks 30 years of bold vision and vibrant growth, the 2025 National Forest Walking Festival is inviting walkers to step into the story—one footpath at a time.
Running from 16 to 26 May, the festival is now in its 16th year, offering more than 80 walks across Leicestershire, Derbyshire, and Staffordshire. Whether you're looking for a gentle meander or a challenging trek, every walk offers a chance to explore this incredible landscape that has been reimagined and regenerated over the past three decades.
A Walk Through Time: 10 woodlands from the first 10 years
As a highlight of this year's festival, join the National Forest team on Thursday 22 May at 10am for a special 11-mile circular walk, tracing the roots of the Forest's first decade. Starting at Sence Valley Forest Park (LE67 6NW – What3Words: behind.goose.spouse), this strenuous six-hour walk with six stiles passes through 10 native woodlands planted in the early years of the National Forest. Along the way, you'll journey through wildlife reserves, working farmland, and charming villages.
There'll be a lunch stop at the historic 1620s Manor House in Donington le Heath, where walkers can enjoy a picnic or visit the café before returning to the park. Places are limited to 20, so booking is essential. To book, contact: Zoe Sewter on 07976 865451 or email zsewter@nationalforest.org
This walk is more than a route—it's a journey through time. It celebrates the very heart of the National Forest story: how a landscape once scarred by mining and heavy industry has been transformed into a thriving haven for nature, wildlife, and community.
When the National Forest began 30 years ago, many doubted it could work. But early supporters planted trees, nurtured new habitats, and shaped a living legacy. Today, more than 9.8 million trees have taken root, and forest cover has increased from just six per cent to over 25 per cent.
This year's Walking Festival showcases the diversity of the Forest with walks for all ages and abilities:
- Gentle strolls under three miles for families, beginners, and those with limited mobility
- Sensory experiences designed to engage all five senses
- Nature bimbles and educational walks for curious minds
- Energetic treks through iconic locations like Calke Abbey and Beacon Hill
Every step of the festival is led by passionate local volunteers, whose insight and enthusiasm bring each walk to life.
Zoe Sewter, volunteer and wellbeing officer at the National Forest, said: “The Walking Festival is a celebration of everything the Forest stands for—community, regeneration, and the belief that nature and people can thrive together. This special 30th birthday walk is a powerful reminder of how far we've come.”
Step into something special this May—whether it's your first visit to the Forest or you've been walking with us for years, the 2025 National Forest Walking Festival is your invitation to connect with this remarkable landscape.
