Kyoto, Japan’s cultural capital, has long been known for its iconic temples, scenic gardens, and vibrant historical districts. However, there is more to discover beyond the crowds of central Kyoto. The Hidden Gems of Kyoto initiative is shining a spotlight on lesser-known areas that offer visitors an authentic, tranquil, and immersive experience. One such gem is the Nishikyo area, a serene haven just 9 minutes by train from downtown Kyoto. Nishikyo, in the western part of Kyoto, is one of six hidden gems the city is promoting to encourage deeper exploration. Easily accessible from the internationally renowned Arashiyama area, it offers visitors a chance to step into a world of natural beauty and cultural treasures that are both timeless and peaceful. Here you can find exquisite bamboo groves without the crowds.

Explore Nishikyo – One of Kyoto’s Best Kept Secrets

Just a 9-minute train ride from downtown Kyoto, Nishikyo is home to some of Kyoto’s most iconic, yet peaceful attractions. The region’s landscapes, rich in bamboo groves, offer an escape from the crowded streets and a chance to connect with nature in a way few other areas of Kyoto can provide.

The Bamboo Path and Kyoto Rakusai Bamboo Park

A must-see for nature lovers, the Nishikyo area boasts Kyoto’s largest bamboo groves. At the Kyoto Rakusai Bamboo Park, visitors can wander through a 1.8 km stretch of picturesque bamboo pathways, immersing themselves in a quintessential Japanese landscape. This region is Japan's largest bamboo-producing area, and the park is the only one in the country to feature a bamboo museum, showcasing approximately 110 varieties of bamboo. Cycling along the bamboo path is highly recommended, and rental bikes are available for easy access right at Hankyu Rakusai-guchi Station.

Matsuno-o Taisha Shrine – A Sacred Space for Sake

For those who appreciate Japanese culture and traditions, a visit to Matsuno-o Taisha Shrine is a must. Located just a minute from Arashiyama by Hankyu train, the shrine is dedicated to the deity of sake. Visitors are greeted by a stunning vermilion-painted torii gate, and rows of sake barrels donated by sake breweries from across Japan. The peaceful atmosphere of the shrine offers a unique glimpse into Japan’s spiritual history, with free admission for all.

Jizo-in Temple – The Temple of Bamboo

About a 10-minute bus ride from Arashiyama, Jizo-in Temple is another serene spot in Nishikyo. Known as the “Temple of Bamboo,” this hidden treasure is surrounded by lush bamboo groves that create a tranquil atmosphere. The temple's peaceful setting, combined with the soothing sounds of rustling bamboo, offers a perfect retreat for those seeking quiet reflection and connection with nature. The temple's spiritual significance and natural beauty make it a must-visit for those exploring the area.

Oharano Shrine- A Water Lily Pond just like Monet’s

Nature lovers will also be enchanted by the beauty of Oharano Shrine, home to a serene pond covered in water lilies from early summer onwards. The view of the water lilies, surrounded by vermilion-painted bridges, has earned the pond the nickname “Monet’s Water Lily Pond of Kyoto.” The striking similarity to the famous French painting makes it an Instagram-worthy spot, not to mention a place of tranquillity and peace. Best of all, admission is free.

Yoshimine Temple and the Majestic Yuryu-no Matsu

Perched high above the city, Yoshimine Temple is known as the “Flower Garden in the Sky” due to its seasonal blooms and sweeping views of Kyoto. The temple is also home to Yuryu-no Matsu, a 39-meter long pine tree that is over 600 years old. Often compared to a dragon soaring through the sky, this magnificent tree has been trained to grow horizontally and its grandeur is an unforgettable sight. Visitors can admire the temple's lush gardens and panoramic views for a modest admission fee.

Why Visit Nishikyo?

Nishikyo offers visitors a rare opportunity to experience the beauty of Kyoto away from the crowds. From the serene bamboo groves to the spiritual sites and picturesque landscapes, the area is rich in culture, history, and natural beauty. Whether cycling through the Bamboo Path, exploring ancient shrines, or admiring the iconic pine tree, Nishikyo provides an unforgettable glimpse into the soul of Kyoto.
