Lonely Planet holding the UK Launch of LGBTQ+ Travel Guide in Edinburgh – One of the Most Queer-Friendly Destinations in the World
Next week Lonely Planet will release its very first LGBTQ+ Travel Guide, a comprehensive and inclusive exploration of over 50 LGBTQ+ friendly destinations worldwide, including Edinburgh.
To celebrate the release of the LGBTQ+ Travel Guide the Lighthouse Bookshop in Edinburgh will be the location of the official UK launch on 17th March at 6:30pm. The event will be hosted by bookstore owner Mairi Oliver and author Alicia Valenski, alongside Chris Zeiher, Senior Director of Trade Sales and Marketing at Lonely Planet.
Written by Queer, neurodivergent travel writer Alicia Valenski, the Lonely Planet LGBTQ+ Travel Guide is designed to help LGBTQ+ travellers navigate the world with confidence, safety, and pride. More than just a list of Queer-friendly spots; it's a collection of stories and firsthand insights gathered from LGBTQ+ locals who call these vibrant destinations home.
Destinations featured span across North and South America, Australia, and mainland Europe with Edinburgh celebrated as one of the most welcoming destinations in the world for the LGBTQ+ community. The Scottish city is seen through the eyes of Mairi Oliver, owner of Lighthouse Bookshop in Newington. Naturally focusing on the literary side of the city, Mairi recommends archives and queer-owned book hubs (including her own 'radical bookstore') throughout Edinburgh, writing that the city is perfect for bookish members of the community.
Mairi's guide is full of bars and restaurants that champion the LGBTQ+ community, such as Kafe Kweer which showcase queer art, and Saffron Cherry that hosts one of the city's most memorable drag nights. There are also options for outdoor travellers, such as the Edinburgh Queer Hiking group, who host guided walks for locals and visitors alike.
