Q&A with Captain Helen de Cent
Q: What inspired you to pursue a career as a barge captain?
A: I have enjoyed a varied career – mostly centred around travel, ranging from tour guiding in the Middle East to cheffing on a riverboat in Paris, which is how I first spotted my first European Waterways barge, the 8-passenger Renaissance! She was an absolute beauty, and within three months my career with European Waterways had begun! I started as a hostess aboard the 12-passenger La Belle Epoque, then later to Renaissance as Hostess and Deck Hand before a few seasons away from the company to further my experience. Once I was Captain of the Spirit of Scotland in the Scottish Highlands, I was encouraged by the company's Operations Manager, James Bairstow, to obtain my pilot's licence and the rest, they say, was history!
Q: Can you share a particularly memorable moment from your time on the waterways?
A: Something that has really resonated with me was aboard Spirit of Scotland, which is one of the largest vessels in the fleet, carrying up to 12 passengers and six crew. As we were travelling through a lock, I noticed a little girl waving at me from the bank and as we drew closer, she seemingly stared in awe before finally asking “are you really driving that?!” I saw myself in that little girl, and replied “Absolutely, and you can too! You can do anything you set your mind to.” I'd like to think that seeing a woman doing what looked like a difficult job that mostly men are seen to do, opened her eyes to a world of possibilities in the future.
Q: What do you love most about working with European Waterways?
A: Quite simply, making trips of a lifetime for people where unforgettable cultural experiences perfectly fused with incredible vistas, fine food and wines (or whiskies!), and a home-from-home onboard experience manned by a fabulous crew.
In fact, European Waterways have always made me feel an integral part of the crew, regardless of my position at the time. I've watched the company grow immensely over the years, but their ethos remains the same: every crew member is important to the company. They believe in building strong team relationships onboard each vessel as it's so important for everyone onboard to get along with each other.
Happy Crew, Happy Clients, Happy Company!
Q: What advice would you give to aspiring female captains or those interested in working in the industry?
A: For females looking to get into the industry it is important to find your passion as this will get you so far! Of course, it won't happen overnight, and you will likely take on roles along the way that you may not enjoy as much, but this is all part of getting to where you want to be.
I am often referred to as the 'Swiss Army Knife of Barging' because of the different roles I have taken on. Having a varied skills set and a keenness to 'have a go' makes you invaluable to a company. People will respect you more as a leader if you can have empathy and first-hand experience in your team's various roles.
Telling your line manager about career progression is so important. If they don't know what you hope to achieve, they cannot help you get there! I also undertook courses in my free time such as an Approved Engine Course. The instructor told me I was the only female that had ever done the course with them! Challenge expectations and inspire others to follow.
Q: Do you have a favourite route or hidden gem along the waterways?
A: I love the Canal Du Midi, the landscape changes on every corner. I also like being warm! Of course, the Caledonian Canal in Scotland is very special to me. Where else can you go monster spotting whilst on a barge?
Q: What are you most looking forward to in your new position as Captain of Shannon Princess in Ireland?
A: I can't wait to explore the stunning River Shannon and immerse myself in Ireland's legendary hospitality. The Shannon Princess has such a fantastic reputation, and I'm looking forward to welcoming new and returning guests aboard and sharing this beautiful region with them. Every waterway has its own unique charm, and I'm excited to discover the hidden gems of the River Shannon while continuing to create unforgettable experiences for our guests – whether it's cruising past ancient castles, spotting local wildlife, or enjoying the warmth of an Irish welcome at the end of the day.
Helen's story is a testament to the passion, expertise, and personalised service that define European Waterways' luxury barge cruises.
